Always a restless creative spirit, a constantly self-renewing citizen of the jazz world and one of the music's leading lights, saxophone legend Sonny Rollins has long been ambivalent about, even averse to, the business side of music. However, since forming his own record label, Doxy, in 2005, Rollins has emerged as an inspired-and surprisingly assertive-entrepreneur.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful sonny February 26, 2001
Format:Audio CD
This is one of the most intimate and deepest music I've ever heard. Sonny's sax has a powerful, viril, deep sound. The other guys are very good, expecially Jim Hall. The interplay between Hall and Rollins is magical, charming.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic sax album from a jazz guitarist's perpective October 14, 2013
Format:Audio CD
I'm a Ft Worth area jazz guitarist and a Sonny Rollins and Jim Hall nut. Rollins playing here is magnificent, but because of my love of jazz guitar I wanted to address the album from a guitarist's perspective. This album is a gold mine for modern jazz guitar comping as it is the first major jazz album by a horn player to employ a guitar trio as it's rhythm section. It came out right as Jim Hall was beginning to define himself as the father of modern jazz guitar. More than Jim's soloing on this album, it's about his comping and textures played against Rollins. It is absolutely masterful stuff that really established the template for how modern jazz guitarists comp in a band. Jim is one of the greatest "listeners" in all of a jazz, and this enabled him to react to dynamically to Rollins and energize his solos. Rollins gets "pushed" in just the right way without ever getting in the way, or trying to lead him. As an interesting aside, I've read that just before this album was cut, Jim somehow witnessed pop singer/guitarist Richie Havens perform. Apparently, he was totally captivated by Havens electrifying rhythm guitar work. Havens had a very distinctive, driving, propulsive right hand strumming technique. Witnessing this led Jim to ponder more than harmony and space, and helped spark new rhythmic techniques that hadn't been heard before from guitarists in jazz.

This album is a classic on any level you want to slice it.
