5.0 out of 5 stars Underrated classic of its time March 12, 2014
By Tony K.
Format:Audio CD
When this album appeared during the summer of 1987, it was a anomaly. Falling somewhere between Pat Benatar-like guitar rock and the post-New Wave Brit pop/rock of the early 80's, it boasted the infectious, glossily layered smash single "Heart and Soul", a song that reverberated through car stereos and night clubs throughout the summer months. After a slow climb up the Billboard charts, the song eventually hit the Top 5 on the the Billboard pop chart before dropping away and relegating this talented British band to the dreaded one-hit wonder status in America. In retrospect, there may have been several reasons for this. The most obvious assumption would be that "Heart and Soul" was too far removed from sound of the rest of the album, which alternates between atmospheric, moody ballads ("Valentine", "I Will Be With You", "China In Your Hand") and frontal assault rockers ("Sex Talk", "The Monkey House", "You Give Up"). It's more likely, however, that this album's failure in America was due to a lack of promotion by Virgin Records. It certainly wasn't due to the quality of the music, evidenced by the fact that five of its tracks were big hits in Great Britain: "Heart and Soul", "I Will Be With You", "Valentine", "Sex Talk" and "China In Your Hand", which spent five weeks at number one on the British charts over the 1987/88 holiday season, eventually becoming the biggest hit of the year. With that being said, this album had all the chops to make a big splash in America, but alas, Virgin Records dropped the ball. Read more ›

I listen to this again after not having herd it in a long time. It's late 80s and not as common as most.
