Grade 5-8 Miller explains how leaders of the Civil Rights movement came to the assistance of the black people of Selma, Alabama. She details actions taken by Hosea Williams, leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and John Lewis, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as they worked with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to organize the black community for a protest march from Selma to Montgomery. Black-and-white photographs of events and people appear on almost every page and reinforce the seriousness of the occasions. Although Miller supplies background events and an afterword about the Voting Rights Act of 1965, this book focuses on the bloody Sunday of March 7, 1965, when black citizens who tried to march peacefully from Selma to Montgomery were thwarted by police, who used tear gas and clubs and made arrests.
