Ashlyn McVean doesn't believe in fairy tales. That is, until Ashlyn is thrown into the crosshairs of grudges her grandmother created long ago. After finding out she is one of two people able to cross between faerie realms, Ashlyn is faced with trying to understand her abilities, along with navigating a new relationship with her boyfriend, Liam. As if being on a centuries old hit list and dealing with crazed pixies isn't enough, her new abilities mean trouble for Liam. Knowing her new life puts everyone she loves in danger, Ashlyn must decide what's most important in her life between friends, family, love, and ultimately, realms.

"I was up last night until 2am and just went to sleep because I knew I wouldn't be able to function today if I didn't go to bed. Yes, the story is this good...It's a story of Irish Folklore, Faeries, long battles and love. Most of all, it's a story about blood and revenge. A must read!" --Thamy, Amazon Reviewer

"Megan Curd has written a fast-paced story that catches you early and doesn't let you go." --I. Gandolfo, Amazon Reviewer

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Imaginations Review of Bridger by Megan Curd June 20, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
The author sent me this book to read and review and I really liked it! The paranormal YA genre has gotten kind of cliche and stupid lately, if you ask me, so it's nice to see something different and refreshing when it pops up.

I was really impressed with the mythology and thought large parts of Bridger were extremely original, which I really enjoyed. I don't believe I have read a book about changelings yet, and if I have, it wasn't very memorable. The plot was a lot of fun and I really appreciate what the author tried to do here.

Let's talk characters. Oh my, I loved Memaw so much. She's probably one of my top characters so far this year. She was such an awesome and tough lady, but incredibly loveable and I really thought she was developed well. I liked Ashlyn as well and enjoyed watching her relationship with Memaw unfold. But I do have to talk about one thing that bothered me. The relationship between Ashlyn and Liam developed too quickly. I am extremely annoyed by insta-love relationships. That and there was a lack of sexual tension so I wasn't really feeling the love. Later on in the novel when we meet Antony and he flirts with Ashlyn, well I thought that was written really well and what was missing from Ash and Liam's relationship.

The pacing was a bit off too. There were a few parts where I wondered when something was going to happen and hoping that it would happen soon. I lost focus in a couple of places and if I had edited it I would have tightened those up. But it wasn't anything major.

Overall a very fun read with a different twist on the ya paranormal genre that I think most readers will enjoy.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unique story December 14, 2011
Format:Paperback
Ashlyn McVean is an ordinary teenager who is thrown into an extraordinary series of events after the death of her father. On a trip to Ireland to visit family, she discovers her lineage is not so normal, and that she is the target of evil forces that are seeking to destroy her. We are led through the challenges that Ashlyn faces as she comes to terms with her newfound abilities and struggles to understand how to fix what her grandmother, Memaw, started many years ago.

I enjoyed this book. The story starts out with a dramatic event, and then never ceases to disappoint with the inclusion of dangerous pixies, an unusual grandmother, and of course, romance. I was impressed with Ms. Curd's imaginative plot about a girl who discovers how she is part of the fairy world and the consequences of this. Ashlyn's adventures were fun to read and the book was definitely a page-turner.

There were a couple of points in the book that were either confusing or unrealistic, which did sometimes make the story hard to follow. More description into the background of Memaw and the fairy world would have enhanced this issue, as well as developing Ashlyn's father's death in more detail into the story.

Ms. Curd's writing is fast-paced and was at times very humorous! I particularly enjoyed the silliness of the boys in the story - a pretty realistic high school situation. The writing was descriptive enough that I could easily imagine the different real-world and surreal locations Ashlyn, Liam, Reese and Memaw were in.

Overall, I gave the book 3 stars. While I feel the story and plot itself was creative and unique, and the character development enjoyable, there were several events that were difficult to follow, leaving me confused as to what was happening at certain points.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! June 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Bridger creates a magical and intriguing world that held my attention and left me wanting so much more.
The characters are great and beautifully written. Ash had me at hello with such an emotional connection right away. Ash has a strong voice and I love how there are funny moments thrown in at all the right times.
I loved and hated the presence of MeMaw right away, she has such a strong personality, and I love where the character arc goes.
I also love the sarcasm and easy going nature between her and Jaime at the beginning, I'm such a sucker for sarcasm ' The introduction of Reese kept me even more intrigued too. Their relationship is pretty undefined, but they have a different but still strong bond than with her and Jaime.
And if I thought I was attached to the story, I didn't know anything until Liam came on the scene. Swoon!
This is action packed, and I never knew what to expect coming next, but Megan wove it all together and created one amazing story. She's a genius and I can't wait for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Review from RadicalParenting.com: July 13, 2011
By Gema
Format:Kindle Edition
Emotional wounds still fresh from her father's death, Ashlyn McVean discovers that faeries exist. Not just that, but that she herself is a Bridger - one of two in existence. Add that to a plethora of secrets slowly seeping out of her family, being stuck between a friend who wants to be more than just a friend, a boyfriend she can't be completely honest with, and a best friend who may or may not be psycho, and you have Ashlyn McVean's life.

What I love about Ashlyn is that she is your average girl. She has a brother she loves to tease, a mother who cares deeply, and a grandmother she doesn't always see eye-to-eye with. She's not the most popular girl in school but she's not completely invisible either. She's just a funny, video-game-loving, down-to-earth girl, and that's what makes her so lovable and relatable.

The book's settings, plural, are impressive. Moving characters half way around the world can be tricky if the story isn't about traveling. Curd manages to split the story between Ireland and the US effortlessly, delivering both the feel of a vacation abroad and the drone of high school effortlessly.

Faeries. Irish boys. Ninja grannies (okay, not really, but you'll see what I mean,) this book is an entertaining read from one page to the next. The only downside is that it is currently only available as an ebook. It'll be available on paperback at the end of the month through Amazon. But until then, get with the times! Download Bridger by Megan Curd and enjoy!
