4.0 out of 5 stars Classic salmon cheese at its finest, August 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Bridges to Bert (Audio CD)
Give me that cheese! I can undoubtedly state that the Salmon boys have GREATLY improved since the making of this album many years ago, but the album does have some great songs on it rarely performed live by the boys any longer. One should buy this album just to hear "Just before the Evening", a beautiful Drew ballad I've never heard live and probably never will. I highly recommend the album if you already love those Salmon boys, but would not recommend it as a first album. "Ask the Fish" is a better representation of the whole LOS experience.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine album by the creators of polyethnic cajun slamgrass, June 5, 2001
This review is from: Bridges to Bert (Audio CD)
This is vintage Leftover Salmon-- and it's a good thing it is back in print. If you don't know by now, LoS is a jam band that performs a unique blend of cajun, bluegrass, blues, rock, reggae, and several other styles that are so smoothly integrated that you might forget just how original their sound is. This album just makes you feel good. "Ask the Fish" and "The Nashville Sessions" are probably better albums which have a more improvisational feel to them, but this is a fine piece of work, and well worth owning. Further listening: the complete works of Jerry Douglas-- the bluegrass dobro master who knows no musical boundaries. Anders Osborne's "Which Way to Here"-- a brilliant blend of blues, rock, and New Orleans R&B. Like this album, it just makes you feel good. David Lindley's "Win This Record"-- rock, blues, reggae and some of the meanest slide guitar you've ever heard. Alvin Youngblood Hart's "Territory"-- a blues musician breaking down barriers. Listen with an open mind.

This review is from: Bridges to Bert (Audio CD)
This early release by Leftover Salmon is a good document of this great band's driving jammy-cajun-grassy-funk-patent-pending sound. Like the Voodoo woman who cursed my bologna, this is music born near high mountian streams and misty gator-infested backbays that grooves slinks and rocks.

With breakneck bluegrass standards: "Whiskey Before Breakfast/ Over the Waterfall" mixed in with the classical overtoned: "Bridges of Time" any style of music can and will be played by Leftover Salmon. It is true that their sound was still evolving in these early days, but this search for the lost chord shows that even just outta the egg, this is a great group of string-wizards and singers.

Concert staples: "Head Bag","Zombie Jamboree" & "Pasta on the Mountain" are right here in their early forms. These tunes would soon expand and morph in concert and become even bigger than they are here on: "Bridges To Bert", but these versions stand on their own weight as well. The band is bursting with energy here and having big fun...This is infectious stuff!

Vince Herman and Drew Emmitt are the founders and leaders of this merry band of musical pranksters. But, you cannot discount the banjo of Mark Vann and the keyboard work of Joe Jogerst are also key elements to what is presented here on: "Bridges". Salmon, has it all together here on this CD, this is a worthy addition to any cool music collection. Any LS record is a great listening experience, and this one shows that even in the early days these fish were already ahead of the pack.
Fine CD from the Leftover Salmon.
