I read the book before I saw the movie. Both are incredible. James Walker's descriptions are so down to earth and yet also almost magical and he makes a person feel like they are the ones experiencing this story. The reason I love the movie so very much was instead of changing everything, it took entire conversations word by word from this book. Get the book and watch the movie. I'll dare you to not want to experience both again and again.

Francesca was a war-bride. The untold refuge, swept up into her marriage by the circumstances of war, similar to the protagonist from the story Babette's Feast (English Subtitled), who was widowed by the French revolution. It becomes her duty to love, although in her case, it isn't always merely a duty. So her actions become less inscrutable in the light of that scarcely mentioned but over arching trauma she wears around her heart like an apron about her waist.

Within the movie, those New England style covered bridges do evoke a certain sense of nostalgia, of some other place in time. Whereas, in the book that title metaphor sort of hangs back like the elephant in the room that's so invisibly present. It's not just about the photo journalist and the farmer's wife. It's about the children of the farmer's wife discovering the poetic soul of their deceased mother in her old correspondence.

It's not really a story of hope, more so a story of enduring hopelessness. To Francesca the act of loving knows no confines, for the focus of love is always others. This is not easily digestible. That a heart may love again, may love another, even if that love only comes around one brief span, invading but one lonely month out of a lifetime.

The film succeeded in making me want to know more about Francesca. Her left-over correspondence plotted bridges across generations, bridges across continents, across taboos. Some people are more accepting of their fate than I can ever imagine being. It was worth my time to better understand her.

I have read this book before and gave it away. Now my wife wants to read it. It is a very well written book. Of course the movie made from it was very good. I can recommend it to anyone who likes a good story. It is especially bad that some of these bridges have been recently burned. What a world we live in.
