This review is from: Brief Encounters (Audio CD)
A brilliant double cd from the original European Disco Diva that perfectly captures her recent forays into standards and covers and embraces her past with a great dance set.
The first CD is entitled 'For the Heart' and is a series of covers done in a soft acoustic ballad style, Ms Lear perfectly makes Amy Winehouse's 'Back to Black' her own, highlights on this cd include a cover of Bowies 'Sorrow' (Lear featured in the original tv special with David Bowie back in 1973), Perfect Day, Comment Te Adieu, and the theme from Mash 'Suicide is painless'. It is evident that La Lear's heart and soul was really into this production and as with 2006's With Love cd it contains some of her finest vocal performances. The first European single taken from side one of Brief Encounters is the ballad 'Someone Else's Eyes' a duet with Deadstar aka Enrico Petrelli. The second cd is subtitled 'For the Feet' and is comprised of mostly dance/club tracks...the best of which is 'Doin Fine' sampling Boney M's Daddy Cool...it is catchy and again like the first cd Lear is in fine form vocally, there is also an extended club mix of this potential huge hit (if radio stations werent so ageist!). Another standout is the 'Pet Shop Boys' inspired version of Presleys 'Always on My Mind' with again La Lear doing brilliant work. Three mixes of 'This is Not America' is a bit overkill...and whilst Lear didnt write the lyrics on this track it reminscent of her own ironic lyrical work. A dance mix of 'Someone Elses Eyes' and two mixes of 'For What I am' (the weakest track) round out side two. Accolades to Amanda Lear and all the producers involved in Brief Encounters...it is truly testament to an enduring talent. The CD has had two further releases Side One has been released as an 'acoustic' cd and side two has been released as 'Brief Encounters Reloaded' with further remixes of songs from both sides including a Boy George mix of 'Someone Elses Eyes'. I cant wait. A must have for fans and non-fans alike
