Book Description

March 1, 2011
2011 Axiom Business Book Awards - Women in Business Silver Award

Women, you're unique. You lead differently from men, and that's a good thing--especially in the world of business!

By reading Briefcase Essentials, you'll learn how to deal with men in business instead of trying to act like them. You--and your male colleagues--will discover that by using your natural talents in the business world, the power of your positive actions will change men's attitude from confrontational to cooperative--even in the most male-dominated environments.

Susan Spencer's one-of-a-kind background has given her a fresh perspective on women in business. Her exciting saga and energizing guide roots for you to succeed and urges you to tackle business issues and situations by relying on your innate talents--explained as twelve ''Briefcase Essentials.'' Specifically, you'll learn:

  • How your ability to be flexible and adaptable in business will help you solve problems and handle workplace issues.
  • How using your knack of engaging people and putting them first will lead to business success.
  • How and when you should stand your ground to achieve positive results and gain credibility.
  • How your intuition can be trusted to help you make important decisions.
  • How your perceptive communication will drive sales and help your company grow.
  • How ''bandwagon men'' help women finance their businesses and support their growth.

Susan's stories and examples are authentic, and her advice for women in business, who own companies, or who are thinking about starting a business is direct, practical, pioneering, and barrier breaking. You are persistent, adaptable, improvisational, and empathetic. When you unleash those and your eight other proven traits in the workplace, your success is inevitable.

About the Author

Susan T. Spencer is unique. She was an entrepreneur and professional before many women had the courage to play in the big leagues with men. Her companies had a combined annual revenue that ranged from a low of $20 million to a high of $50 million.

She learned about football and business from her father, Leonard Tose, who owned the Philadelphia Eagles football team. Before the age of forty, Susan was a mother, had been a business owner, was a lawyer, and was the general manager of that NFL team. Susan eventually returned to business, diving headfirst into the food distribution industry where she ran a successful global business. She added two more businesses to her ventures, both in food processing, one of which she owned and ran for more than twenty years.

Susan earned a bachelor's degree from Boston University, a master's in Education/Economics from Hofstra University, and her law degree from Villanova University. She currently resides in the western part of the United States with her husband, Bob.

More About the Author

Author Susan T Spencer graduated with honors and awards from Boston University (BA) and received her MA in history/economics from Hofstra-- her thesis on "The Role of Women in Business During the Revolutionary War, 1770-1785" was a foreshadowing of her own business career.

She founded her first company--(Papillon) producing high-end tennis clothing to stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. A legal dispute with her partner resulted in an early termination of the company which motivated her to enter law school to study business law.

Fresh out of Villanova Law School she talked her dad into hiring her to work at his company--The Philadelphia Eagles. She served as legal counsel ,vice president and acting general manager of the franchise--the only woman to ever hold all three positions with a professional football team.

Immediately after the team was sold, she started her own food distribution company. Three years later she purchased her first meat processing company--Allied Steaks, and then, purchased a large meat company that generated sales of 40 million dollars. She owned and operated all three companies for several years. Visit the photo gallery to see Susan T Spencer at work.

After selling the large meat company a few years later to a company in the mid west, and eventually also selling her food distribution business, Susan continued to expand Allied Steaks, which she owned and operated for twenty years.

Briefcase Essentials was written to share her stories about working in male dominated businesses and pass on her "hands on"and first hand knowledge to other women in business.

She currently owns a meat trading company, is a guest lecturer, and mentor for the Nevada Girl Scouts, leading courses on "essentials" for women in business.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical insights February 28, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a concise and entertaining book filled with helpful tips and real life examples for EVERYONE about how to get along in the business world and find success. Despite that it's written by a woman, for women, I think the natural talents that Susan notes many women have are also found in many men - and if they don't have the natural talents, they can learn them. For women to be successful, we have needed to learn to adopt many of the classic male attributes that make them successful (including being arrogant, when appropriate, as someone once pointed out to me) and men can also gain from hearing what has worked for women. Much of Susan's lessons boil down to "emotional intelligence" which is important for men and women alike to succeed in all workplaces. This is a great book for folks at all stages of their careers, whether as an instruction guide for those starting out or as a refresher course for those further down the path. The wisdom it offers is reminiscent of the Dale Carnegie book, "How to Win Friends & Influence People" which is also a great read at different intervals of a career for the same reason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Concise & insightful manual for success March 7, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I had the good fortune to read the initial draft of this book but I still wasn't prepared for how much I would enjoy the final version. I have known Susan for years and I can tell you that she writes what she knows about and she knows a lot about how to accomplish your goals in a world that purports to support and encourage the advancement of women despite much evidence to the contrary. And though not the first to acknowledge how difficult women can be when it comes to advancing members of their own sex, she certainly doesn't shy away from the issue. She provides useful suggestions on how to work and succeed within these constraints as well as how to overcome everyday obstacles inherent within any working environment, regardless of the size. She has lived it, learned some hard lessons along the way and managed to succeed, sometimes in spite of herself. Male or female, anyone hoping to reach their goals or push themselves to the next level can benefit from these insights, presented in a concise, often humorous and easy to access format.

3.0 out of 5 stars A different opinion June 12, 2011
Format:Hardcover
I have not read this entire book but I did read some of what Susan has to say about what it takes for women to succeed in the workplace. I am not sure I entirely agree with everything she says but we do agree on some points.
