2.0 out of 5 stars Plastic Parts Warp
I purchased this machine last year for Christmas. It worked well for about 6 months. The plastic interior parts warp and create problems. It will no longer brew a full cup of coffee. Also, the lid warped. Replacement parts cannot be purchased. The machine must be returned to New Jersey for warranty work. Based on the cost of the coffee maker, this seems to be very...

I was at first a little weary about spending so much on such a machine but now that I own it, I can assure you it is more than worth the price. This machine is all stainless steel and is built very rugged and well and looks GREAT on your counter top.The espresso produced is rich with perfect crema. The frother is a powerhouse that will froth a mountain of foam in no time at all. The coffee maker makers PERFECT coffee thanx to water being heated to the optimal temperature and because it is a cone filter and not a flat bed one which makes a huge difference.Espresso makers under around 150 dollars cannot make "real" espresso because they cannot generate enough bars of pressure. This one generates 15 bars, well above the 9 bars needed for savory espresso.Anything more expensive than this machine only adds large volume commercial capacity.

For home use there is no better choice than this. You will get espresso and coffee as good as any coffee shop from a machine that looks great and is built to last for years. One more thing, ...this machine is not hard to use.... There are only 4 buttons after all. Very easy to use. If you are picky about your coffee/espresso, then get this machine!! =)

Follow up : I have now owned this machine for over 4 years and still use it regularly. Sadly the coffee maker side broke after only a few months, but the espresso side is the main reason I bought this machine. From time to time this machine will leak (drip) water from the steam wand area (only while in use) . This is no big deal as it is only a few drops here and there and doesn't affect the performance of this machine . Even after 4 years this baby still works like a charm, making GREAT latte type drinks and espressos just as well as when I first got it.

If you are going to use pods I highly recommend using Illy pods over any other brand (I have tried pretty much all of them). To save money I usually just buy whole bean Illy beans or go to my local supermarket and buy whole bean Starbucks Espresso beans and grind them to a fine grind at home. Sometimes I will roast my own espresso beans which is alot of fun with green coffee beans I buy from sweetmarias.com.

Some people have mentioned that the slider bar that controls the ammount of espresso you make is useless and makes a different ammount every time . The trick is you have to use the same grind , same ammount of coffee and same tamp each time, which is not that hard to do. Even more importantantly make sure you primer the machine before making any espresso. This is something that is not unique to this machine as the majority of consumer machines require this. To primer it all you do is make one shot of hot water before making any espresso. Otherwise your first shot of espresso is going to be way short.

To those who say this machine doesn't stay at temperature long enough to make more than a couple shots at a time or froth alot of milk at a time you are right. But you must realize I have NEVER used or heard of an espresso machine under a grand that will. This is for the most part a machine intended for consumer use. More professional machines have double boilers that allow for non stop use and usually cost well over a grand (usually much more than that). If you are making several shots of espresso by the time you have the head off and throw away the old grinds and add/tamp the new ones and have it back in the machine it is usually up to temperature again and ready to rock. For consumer machines a small ammount of patience is needed, but not much.

Making your espresso drinks at home will save you alot of money and, in my humble opionion, the cappas you make on this machine are of much higher quality than most cafes . This machine is fun to use, and 4 years after buying it I am still happy with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Combination This Is!, July 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Briel ED271APG Multi-Pro Stainless Pump Espresso With10C Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
My husband purchased the Briel Multi-Pro ED271APG combination pump espresso machine with built in drip coffeemaker. The espresso machine portion is incredible and produces a rich thick crema each time we brew espresso, whether it be from pods of ground coffee. The auto espresso flow feature makes it easy to start and the machine stops automatically based on the amount of coffee you requested. The machine is a real powerhouse in terms of steam pressure for frothing milk. We use this several times a week. But the best feature of the machine is the drip coffeemaker portion. It brews 10 cups of hot coffee in a short amount of time. The pause and serve feature is great. This combination machine is perfect for our counter as it's a multi-purpose machine that is used everyday. You can even brew drip coffee at the same time as making an espresso. Pretty cool...We've had Briel before and are more than satisfied.

This machine works great, however I agree with other reviews stating that the instruction sheet is virtually useless. The regular coffee half of the machine works great and it's quite fast. It also keeps the coffee hotter than other machines I've had. I really only have 2 complaints about the machine. 1.) If you keep the machine on a counter that's under a cabinet, you will have to continually pull it out to fill the coffee side of the machine with grounds and water. The lid swings up and it's quite tall. 2.) The water reservoir for the espresso side of the machine is a bit awkward to remove and fill. Other machines lift out easier and have a carry handle. The instructions are correct in stating that it's easier to fill the reservoir with a pitcher rather than removing it. Other than that, it seems well designed and well made for a home machine. I think I'd like to see the control for the frother more accessible on the front of the machine rather than the side, but that's a minor point. This is the best combination machine and I think you'll like it in a home kitchen. Looks nice too, being all stainless steel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Coffee Shop at Home, November 15, 2000

This is a must to have in your home. This machine takes care of all coffee lovers. Whether they like espresso, cappuccino, latte, auto-drip or the creamiest hot chocolate you ever had. There is something for everybody. It was easy to use and the results were incredible. It even had a cup warming surface on top of the espresso side of the machine so that the espressos' always stay hot.

5.0 out of 5 stars any more confusion?, March 27, 2001

This review is from: Briel ED271APG Multi-Pro Stainless Pump Espresso With10C Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
Some people who have reviewed this product clame this is not a 10 cup coffee maker when indeed it is.. the strange thing about coffee makers is that the cups have never been 8oz cups in ANY brand I have seen EVER! think about it, if ANY coffee maker truly made 10 cups, that would be an 80 ounce pot! And for those many 12 cup models out there that would be 96 ounces if it went by 8 oz cups,, but as you can easily see, no coffee maker has a pot THAT large! I don't know why coffee makers have never gone by true cups, but that's just how its always been..Now about this coffee maker: It makes a classic 10 cup pot, which is 40 ounces exactly. The coffee it makes is wonderful and perfect temperature. The espresso it makes is PERFECT with WONDERFUL crema. The frother is amazing and a real powerhouse.. I have owned this machine for many months now and use it daily. I have never had ANY problems with it and it is well worth the price you pay for it. Looks beautiful, built rugged, performs GREAT! What more could ya want!?? :)

This review is from: Briel ED271APG Multi-Pro Stainless Pump Espresso With10C Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
After putting myself through college by working at an espresso bar, I developed a bit of a latte habit. Ten years and many income levels later, I decided it was time to purchase a semi-professional machine for home. Sadly, the Briel worked beautifully for only a few months. Now it cannot heat water to anything above lukewarm, much less make a steaming cup of espresso or froth milk. And the service center is as completely unhelpful as reported by other users. Anyone need a rather large hunk of metal sculpture? It looks a lot like an espresso machine....

3.0 out of 5 stars Troublesome machine, November 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Briel ED271APG Multi-Pro Stainless Pump Espresso With10C Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
I purchased the Briel as an upgrade from a Capresso espresso maker that was giving me a lot of trouble. I am sorry to say the Briel has joined the ranks as well. I am experiencing the same problems as the last reviewer whose machine stopped brewing full cups of espresso after about 6 months. After calling the Briel customer service line, they speculated that my filter holder must be clogged and are supposedly sending me replacements (I had to pay for them of course). He claimed that this fixes the problem in about 90% of the cases but I am
anxious to see if it does. My machine also drips water continuously from the frother. I would say that if you are a novice with low expectations, this machine might be fine. But a friend of mine has a basic model Saeco that I think makes much better espresso with more crema. I wouldn't spend the $$ on this machine again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this machine, November 30, 2001

This review is from: Briel ED271APG Multi-Pro Stainless Pump Espresso With10C Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
I have wanted a good pump driven comb machine for some time. I am not the least unhappy with my purchase. I have owned this Briel for about 5 months now and I haven't had one issue with it. The espresso is very good as well as the coffee. Frothing is excellent too. The temp of the coffee is perfect. I add milk to my coffee and believe me, it is HOT afterward. Double espresso turnes out with perfect crema with or without pods. The stainless steel body really is nice looking.....I am sick of plastic parts that are cosmetically altered to look like chrome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Machine for the N. American, August 24, 2002

This review is from: Briel ED271APG Multi-Pro Stainless Pump Espresso With10C Drip Coffeemaker (Kitchen)
Just got our ED271APG. Have used it for about a week. I have no idea why anyone would complain. Makes great espresso/coffee. Could use a timer.... This issue was solved with a $10.00 wall plug timer.

I am not a coffee/espresso expert but I have lived in Italy and France and have had lot's of Euro coffee beverages. If you want to improve on this home machine it seems you might have to spend a lot more for not a great deal more in performance....if any.

The main feature is the Espresso and other Espresso based drink capability...Plenty of Crema and Plenty of steam. The adjustment for one or two shots works great. Just a matter of controling what type of grind you put in. Like all espresso makers, a little experimenting solves all the issues. The standard coffee maker side is a convience that makes the Multi-Pro combo a great assest to our home.

To summarize.....So far it's a great buy from Briel / Amazon.

If there is a change in my opinion I'll follow up later
