Product Description

Amazon.com Review

This compact 1,200-watt machine automatically produces espresso withthe push of a button. Easy-to-understand controls put espressos, cappuccinos, and lattes a fingertip away, and the stainless-steel boiler produces two cups of espresso in just seconds. An electronic control lets you select the amount of espresso brewed each time, from 2 to 8 ounces. Other noteworthy features include a removable 30-serving water tank with an intake water filter and water-level display, an antidrip system, a filter for thick crema, a die-cast filter holder for minimum heat loss, and a frothing attachment on the steam nozzle for cappuccino foam and lattes. A coffee tamper and measuring spoon accompany the 11-3/4-by-8-3/4-by-8-inch machine, which is clad in hard, bright plastic. --Fred Brack

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine.

Perfect espresso, first time, and every time. Virtually fool-proof, but then growing in my foolishness. The magic "crema" disc must do the trick, combined with the higher pressure of ~ 15 bars. Stovetop machines can't force the steam through the coffee correctly because they only generate 3 bars (atmospheres). What sold me was the 10 year guarantee on the pump. If most espresso machines can do the job, I wanted one that would last. I looked at machines from $20 closeouts to $2000 commerical models. This is the lowest priced with the best features. Anything cheaper, doesn't give you the pressure (except the Briel's Lido) nor the autoflow so you don't have to hold down a lever. "Just set it and forget it for a minute". Anything more expensive doesn't add much more than aesthetics and commercial capacity. Oops, gotta go, it's getting cold.

We've owned this Briel model for 3 years, and have used it 4-5 times per day. It is very convenient to operate and clean. The viewable water level lets you know when the water level is low, and the water reservoir is big enough that one doesn't have to fill it too often.

My only complaint is the difficulty in getting parts (rubber "O" rings for the frothing wand). Briel needs to improve parts availability in the U.S. However, the value for money cannot be beat, and so I'm buying a new one for my office.

By the way, the espresso and cappucino is great from the machine -- good crema and froth.

Wonderful Crema June 29, 2000
By A Customer
I can only compare this machine to a regular boiler espresso machine (used Krups until now). In comparison Briel produces a wonderful, rich crema. The coffee is less hot and therefore less bitter. The froth produced is also better. The coffee flow can be interupted by a push of a button and again instantly reinstated. The large water tank can be refilled either from the top or the container itself can be removed from the back of the machine. The drip tray itself is also completely removable, allowing for easy cleaning. The forthing attachment can be removed by simply pulling on it. Briel is a very good European brand. I also find the 10 year pump warranty very impressive. So far, I love the Briel Chamonix.
