The Briggs & Riley 21" LX carry-on is a solid, well-constructed bag that seems likely to last for many years. The novel expansion function is particularly outstanding. But other features make this bag impractical for many travelers. As a result, I quickly returned mine in favor of a different option.

The most serious flaw concerns the enclosed sleeve for dress clothes. While seemingly spacious, the sleeve's design doesn't take full advantage of all that space. Clothes hangers rest on a hook in the sleeve, rather than sticking out the top as with many others manufacturers' bags, and the garments thus hang low in the sleeve. If your suit or dress is long, it will stick out the sleeve's bottom opening. When the sleeve is then folded, the bottoms of your garments are uncovered and easily damaged or wrinkled.

After folding, the sleeve is placed into a zippered compartment in the inside lid of the case. This compartment is neither wide enough nor thick enough, so that if you try to pack anything more than a single suit, the sleeve doesn't easily fit into the compartment. One then has to jam the sleeve inside, wrinkling the contents. This is an unfortunate flaw, as otherwise this case is certainly large enough to warrant a suit sleeve that holds two suits.

The whole bag is very heavy for a carry-on, weighing more than 11 pounds when empty. This may not be an issue for taller, stronger travelers, but placing the bag in a plane's overhead compartment would be a challenge for some. Airlines also impose weight restrictions on carry-on baggage, and this bag is more than halfway to those limits before you put a single thing inside. Airlines don't often bother to weigh your carry-ons, but sometimes they do.

Finally, the bag is a bit too large to be a carry-on in Europe, where I travel. While it fits into most overhead compartments, it does not fit into many carry-on sizers that are found at airline check-in counters in European airports. The bag is actually 21.5 inches long, not 21 as advertised. But the real concern is the bag's girth, which is at least 9 inches when you take into account the exterior handle mechanism. Airlines don't usually ask you to prove your bag's carry-on-worthiness in the sizer, but if they do, you'll probably be out of luck with this one.

This is an excellent bag if you don't need to pack more than one suit, and if you don't mind the possibility of having to check it into the baggage hold. Otherwise, be wary.
