I was using my 10+ year-old riding lawnmower when suddenly the engine quit. The fuel solenoid cutoff sits under the carburetor bowl, and stops the fuel from leaving the carburetor after the ignition is shut off, to prevent back-firing when you shut the mower off. Mine had failed, and would not allow any fuel to flow. After replacing it, the mower runs fine again.

To diagnose the problem, I put my hand on the old part while turning the ignition on and off. There should have been a magnetic click, but there was none. Then I metered the wiring going into the part, and it showed the proper 12 volts, so I knew it was getting power.

Replacing the part is easy as long as you have the right tool. You need a 13 mm cone wrench. That's like a regular open end wrench, but very thin, because there is not much space for the wrench between the part and the carb. Cone wrenches are used for bicycle repair. Make sure you close the fuel line or clamp it with pliers. Or remove the fuel tank and put it below the carb. Otherwise gas will keep on flowing (leaking) while the solenoid is removed. Anyway, after taking care of the fuel line and unplugging the wire from the solenoid, just unscrew the old part with the wrench (put a container under the solenoid to catch any fuel remaining in the bowl), and put in the new solenoid. I added a new gasket as well.

Trick: here is a temporary repair you can make. Remove the old solenoid, depress the plunger, then wedge a piece of a toothpick to hold the plunger down. Then reinstall. If the solenoid is your problem, the engine will run. While using this fix, the mower may backfire during shutdown. You can reduce that by adjusting the throttle to low for a few seconds before shutting off the engine.

The part came with a spare wire, but I didn't use that. My old wire seemed fine.

This thing is supposed to shut off fuel after you turn off key, I guess to minimize backfires....and it works. Just doesn't seem to be a needed item in the design....just something else to go wrong, right ?

Installed OK, but I had to convert one of my lawn mower wires from a barrel connector to a spade connector that was not a standard size, so I had to reduce it's width to fit the female connector with a grinder.

Old one leaked after shutting mower off. Tried new gaskets in bowl but that was not the problem. Mower shop said it had to be gasket but the old solenoid was the priblem

Installed it on a Yardman 13am675 mower. Was easy to install and the mower cranked right up. If you mower doesn't want to start, check this for malfunction.

It was the part needed to get my old riding mower going again. Matched the original one exactly. Make sure you have a very narrow wrench.
