This review is from: Briggs & Stratton Automatic Home 12,000-Watt Stand-by Generator 1815 (Lawn & Patio)
The hurricane that reached DC resulted in cobbling together a transfer switch and generator. It's a blessing to have everything arrive in two packages. This model would back-up a typical home. For a grand and a half more, the 15,000 watt (15 kVA) model could hypothetically allow the owner to tell the power company to take a hike. But it's rude and unwise to burn bridges.
$1,300 buys a premium transfer switch. For a grand and a half less, the 7 kVA model with manual transfer would suffice to provide emergency power to the typical home. It requires load shedding which means to select a few circuits to stay "hot". The other reviewers have impressed this electrician with their know-how and explanations. Dang-nabbit, there goes the job. Where's that resume? The only way to improve this unit would be to offer an alternative to use fuel oil. Many people have fuel oil delivered to their homes but lack service from a gas utility. Just having the 100 amp or a 200 amp transfer switch on the home should increase its value. The new owners can buy their own generator. Amazon keeps erasing the link to the switch, but typing "transfer switch 200" without the quotes brings the right product up in a search. Clicking on "other products by..." works but of course limits the selection. |
