About the Author

Roger Priddy’s passion for educating children through fun, informative and engaging books has led him to create some of publishing’s most enduring and successful non-fiction early learning books. Roger lives in London and has three children, who have been the inspiration behind many of his best publishing ideas.

More About the Author

Roger Priddy is the creator of over two hundred best selling books for young children including Wipe Clean ABC, First 100 Words, and Fuzzy Bee.

When he was at school he couldn't decide between being a patisserie chef or going to art college. On the advice of his father he chose art college and trained as an illustrator before becoming a designer at Usborne Publishing.

Roger's love for children's early learning has led him to create some of the most successful children's non-fiction books, first at Dorling Kindersley (My First Word Book, Incredible Cross Sections and My First Cook Book) before he set up Priddy Books with St. Martins Press in New York where several of his books have sold over a million copies each including My Big Animal Book and Happy Baby Words.

In total he has sold over 65 million books worldwide and his books have been translated into over 30 languages.

He says "It is always rewarding to see a child enjoying and learning something from one of our books, especially the babies when you think it could be the first book they have ever seen.

I am very lucky to have a career where you get to think up fun ways to teach a kid how to write their letters and learn their first words whilst finding out about Dinosaurs at the same time!"

Roger lives with his wife Zena in London and Cork, Ireland (when it's not raining, which isn't very often!) They have four children Sam, Rose, Alannah and Gabriel (and a dog called Wallace) who have given him most of his best ideas for his books. He still loves baking bread and cakes!

This book does have some nice pictures, but I don't like the way some of the animals are named, for example calf instead of cow, kitten instead of cat.... I think very young children find it easier to say cat, cow instead of kitten and calf. There were too many of these types of identifiying names. I'd stick with a book that has the basic names and work from there as my child gets older.

I ordered several books when my son was just a few weeks old and this is his favorite book. I call it his "first book". It is great because every other page has a white background for the stark contrast needed for newborns, yet every OTHER page has a different color background. The book has great photos and color. Recommended for anyone looking for a good book to introduce to a newborn. I ended up buying several more books by Bright Baby....

As another reviewer stated, some of the names of animals are a little confusing for little ones. My son will soon be 2, so he can't read the words yet to know that I'm calling a calf a cow, or a kitten a cat. Seriously, a MACAW?! Come on, just call it a bird and it'll be less confusing for everyone. I do enjoy the wide variety of animals, and the number of pages, so we'll have it in the rotation. I'll have to be more careful about looking at all of the pages next time to see if I really want it for my son. As he gets older, and starts to learn words and read, I won't want to confuse him!

My baby really likes this book. My only wish is that the animals written names were consistent with the adult animal name (there is a kitten, a calf, some chicks, etc.) It really isn't a big deal, seeing as how he can't read and by the time he can read he will understand that babies are referred to by different names than adults. Overall, the pictures are nice, colors are vibrant, a great book.

This book is sturdy, durable, visually interesting, well-designed and a great place to launch an infant's interest in books, photos and naming real-life animals that will be seen around the house, in the neighborhood and at the zoo. Bright Baby Animals is part of a wonderful series of board books which includes Bright Baby Colors and Bright Baby First Words (both of which I also highly recommend). Rather than confusing an infant's eyes with an array of images all at once, the nice thing about these books is that they are laid out very simplistically with one photograph and word per page on a solid-colored background. No clutter and no distractions. For the infant who is just starting to point at everything in the world and seek "identification tags", this entire series is the perfect first set of books.

Ever since he was an infant, my son has kept coming back to these books. I think it is because they can be easily adapted to teach a variety of concepts and they evolve to meet his constantly changing points of interest. I give this book five stars for a variety of reasons including the simple visual images it provides, the focused learning it encourages, and the variety of ways in which it can be used to teach not just animals, but also other concepts such as colors. With its beautiful photography of real-life animals set against simple, solid backgrounds, this book is definitely a solid choice with which to start your child's home library!

This book is great!

Just to get it out of the way: It's true that the actual written words give the name of the baby animal (calf, kitten) on some pages but not others, but the way I see it, by the time my son is actually reading the words, he'll understand that you use a different word for the baby version of the animal, and it won't be a problem.

The two main things that make this book great:
1) Although this is a board book, it has a hardcover binding that sticks out past the board pages, making it MUCH easier to open than a normal board book. The hard cover is also much more drool and teeth resistant than a standard board book page.

2) Photographs instead of pictures, and they are very SIMPLE photographs on colorful backgrounds, bringing all the focus onto the animal (instead of trying to pick the animal out of a complicated habitat photo).
My 11 month old son does not recognize line drawings of dogs, but as soon as he saw the dog on the first page, he woof-woofed at it!

He loves it when we go through and make the noises that each animal would make (when applicable... not sure what to do for penguins or bunnies, for example). I highly recommend this book for infants and toddlers.

My son loves this book. It has been his favorite since about 6 months old. As he has gotten a little older, he actually does very well identifying the baby animal form of better know animals (like kitten vs cat). He loves to go through each page and name the animal and make the noise that the animal "says". The images are very nice and the book is a wonderful size. It is a funny little thing but since the cover of this book is actually wrapped like a standard book binding and not a board page, my son never tried to chew on it. I think that alone makes it one of my favorites!
