Book Description

If home is where the heart is, where do you go if your heart is torn in two,
between Amish and English loves?

When Charity Bright intercepts a Christmas card, she is astonished to discover a long-hidden secret: she is not the sole surviving woman in her Old Order Amish family. Once, her father had a sister--a shunned aunt Charity never knew she had.

Bright Christmas: an Amish love story follows Charity and her friend, Daniel Yoder, as they venture to New York City on a purposed Rumspringa, determined to bring Charity's Aunt Hope back to the family fold by Christmas Eve. Charity and Daniel grew up as neighbors in Amish Country, but Charity nurses a private dream, that their relationship could grow to much more than the friends they've always been. Time traveling together will surely tell if she will come to be his bride.

One thing is certain: Charity and Daniel will be fish out of water beyond Amish Country borders. Neither knows how the other will respond to what modern life has to offer, whether it will draw them together in love, or tear them apart. As it happens, they'll have just three weeks in New York City with Hope...and Leanne, a pregnant runaway they find under Hope's wing. The English world has its allures, but none proves more powerful than the bonds of love that develop between Charity and her Aunt Hope, threatening Charity's blossoming romance with Daniel, and compelling both women to decide which place to call home.

From the author of Amazon bestselling novel 'Merry's Christmas: a love story' comes this pure, redeeming romance. Whether you're an Amish Fiction & Romance lover or completely new to the Amish drama genre, Charity's multicultural journey crosses over to all people of faith, resonating with questions, every step of the way:

  • How will Charity choose between those she loves?
  • What will become of her dream of marrying Daniel as an Amish bride?
  • Can Charity come to terms with her faith when it threatens her romance?
  • Will she return home for Christmas, or will she embark upon an entirely new life?
That is the road Charity travels in this heartrending coming of age Rumspringa adventure, across the Advent season, leading up to a Christmas she will never forget.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"From the gentle glow of Amish Country to the neon lights of New York City, Charity shines in this timeless journey of faith, hope, and love."

Cheryl McKay - Co-author & Screenwriter Never the Bride

"Amish fans are going to love this story. Bright Christmas is much more than typical Amish fiction. It's a story where the characters' hearts are divided, making them question what they truly believe in and why. Several plot twists and a totally unpredictable, but satisfying ending made Bright Christmas  a real page turner. The story takes place during the holiday season but is a fantastic read any time of the year. A story that totally took a different direction which was wonderful."

About the History of this Book

Long before publishing this first foray into Amish Fiction, I originally wrote this story as a screenplay for a motion picture. A beloved friend who grew up near Amish Country read the first draft of that script way back when. Inspired by the script, she stopped at an Amish yard sale during a visit to her childhood home. There, she purchased an Amish dress, a Sunday apron, a black bonnet, and a white kapp. As a colleague in the entertainment industry, she knew that films can often take many years to get made. Still it was her hope that one day, these tokens of affection for this story would somehow be used in the telling of it.

Years passed. My friend lovingly stored what she had purchased.

While writing the novel based on that original screenplay, I began to think about the cover, and that bonnet and kapp my friend had set aside for me years before. It communicated the simplicity and purity of this story so well. And so it was that my friend came to photograph the bonnet and kapp, along with fresh holly sprigs from her yard. Another dear friend who is a graphic designer helped fashion those photos into what you now see on this book's cover. So, it is with the generosity and love of my friends, and an enduring respect for the Amish, that I present Bright Christmas: An Amish Love Story to you. May it remind us all of the pure gift that is Christmas.

5.0 out of 5 stars A heartfelt education and journey of love September 8, 2013
By Debbie
Format:Paperback
I preface this review by including the word education because once I understood the language of the Amish and was beginning to identify with Charity's feelings and longing - it was so heartfelt I found myself not being able to put the book down. Rarely do I sit and read a book that quickly! While I love the large city for its opportunity for anonymity I now want to experience the life of a much smaller community where people really know one another and feel like everyone is family. The story touched my heart because I am that loner, that aunt in the Big Apple (NYC) and it would be very touching, as this story was, to have someone find me for the purpose of reestablishing a relationship. The title of this book, Bright Christmas, and it's timing are perfect because love, forgiveness and family are essential at any time but especially at Christmas. GREAT STORY!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A redeeming love story September 8, 2013
By Kim
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book! The author does a great job of taking the reader on a walking tour of the Amish culture through the eyes of a young woman who has only lived in an 'Amish culture.' When she has the opportunity to visit NYC to reconnect with a shunned relative and try to persuade her to return to her home, she unexpectedly discovers new love . This story promises to satisfy anyone who loves stories of forgiveness that require one to examine their worldview.
Another excellent book by Susan Rohrer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Susan's books are always a delight! September 7, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I've read three of Susan's novels and loved each one but this one might be my favorite. The details about the Amish way of life were especially interesting and were presented in such a way to make the later action of the book understandable. The characters are real - at once conflicted and charming - and easy to root for. The story is fun but it's safe and appropriate for all ages. This book would make a wonderful gift for a young woman - or frankly, one of any age! I look forward to giving it to my 16 year-old niece for Christmas.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful! September 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
What did I love best about this book? That there were realistic challenges for the characters! People actually had to wrestle with what was the right thing to do, and there weren't any easy solutions. The author didn't go for an unrealistic happy ending, although she leaves you with hope that things will work out for the characters. All in all, a fun read, and I was left wanting to read more by this author.
