Exquisite Music,
By Richard D. Ankney (PITTSBURGH, PA, US) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bright Day (Audio CD)
This release by Emily Rodgers and her band is a real gem. The music has an ethereal feel, but at the same time it's deeply moving and personal. Rodgers' voice and style are perfect for the material. She doesn't overwhelm the songs. No vocal theatrics here, just honest singing that seems to come from the deepest place possible. Listening to these songs, you get the feeling that Rodgers has given them all she has to give. There's nothing left behind, nothing held back. In some of the songs, "In Spring Alchemy" for instance, the phrasing can only be described as achingly beautiful. The entire band does excellent work. Erik Cirelli's guitar work is especially noteworthy. Listen to "Can You See Me Now?", perhaps my favorite track, and you'll know what I mean. This artist deserves a much wider audience. Highly recommended.

Stunning Voice and Equally Adept Songwriting,

This review is from: Bright Day (Audio CD)
One of my favourite albums of the last year. Rodgers' high voice is enveloped in minor key washes of instrumentation, each song carrying hopes and expectations amidst a world weary cynicism. Never depressing though. Kind of other worldly psychedelic folk/alt country but really just distinctly her. A great talent that almost defies categorisation.
