Editorial Reviews

Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion will release their second full-length album, Bright Examples, on Ninth Street Opus on Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Bright Examples is produced by Vetiver's Andy Cabic and Thom Monahan (Vetiver, Devendra Banhart), and includes 12 original songs featuring the duo's patented country rock songwriting and rich vocal harmonies beautifully intertwining with Vetiver's West Coast pastoral psych-rock aesthetic.

Special guests on Bright Examples include Vetiver's drummer Otto Houser, Gary Louris and Mark Olson of The Jayhawks (background vocals), singer songwriter/guitarist Neal Casal (guitar, photography), Kevin Barker and Charlie Rose (pedal steel, flat picking guitars), and Rad Lorkovic (piano).

This latest release by Sarah Lee & Johnny is phenomenal! It has a delicious flavor of early Buckingham Nicks combined with that Scrumptious Guthrie family folk roots and Johnny's fantastic writing abilities make this CD a must have for today's folk music fans.
I highly recommend it!

Sarah Lee is the daughter of Arlo and granddaughter of Woody, so she obviously has some incredible musical genes, but to her credit she has followed her own musical path with her musical companion, Johnny Irion. She has a lovely voice and this melodic folk-rock material perfectly suits her style. I liked their previous album, "Explorations," quite a lot, and this one I think is just as strong. More gorgeous tunes with folky harmonies abound. I'm tempted to use She & Him as a reference point, but I think that Johnny and Sarah Lee are much better than She & Him, especially in terms of song quality and the sheer passion they pack into their tunes. Another reviewer used the Jayhawks as a comparison, and while I don't think this sounds much like that band, I think fans of the Jayhawks would indeed like Sarah Lee and Johnny's music too. This album has horrible cover art --- a factor that won't help retail sales --- but the music inside is well worth hearing.

I've loved "Explorations" since it was released in 2005. To my surprise and delight, this album is even better - more of their instinctive sense of melody, more of their gorgeous harmonies. The lyrics and phrasing are more natural... It's just so good. Yes, you can hear influences - The Jayhawks (Gary Louris and Mark Olson sing on the album), The Byrds, Neil Young, Gram and Emmylou, Buckingham-Nicks. Helpful maybe, but mainly its Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion, doing something not quite like anyone else.
