Book Description

9 and up
A group of women, spinning and weaving wool in a house in classical Athens, share ancient myths and legends about the beautiful and fearsome Athena, the Greek goddess of war and wisdom. Bright-Eyed Athena collects eight famous and lesser-known Greek myths retold especially for children in a lively and readable format, illustrated with statues, gems, and pottery fragments from the collections of the Getty and other museums. The tales of the great weaving contest between Arachne and Athena, Pandora's box, Perseus, and the Gorgon Medusa, along with other myths, represent a captivating introduction to the history and culture of ancient Athens.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-7-After a brief introduction, readers are sent into a weaver's room where the elder weavers begin to tell stories of Athena. Retellings of familiar tales such as Arachne, Pandora, Perseus and Medusa, and Demeter and Persephone are included. Stories of how Athena gave the olive tree to Athens, and how she became the protector of the city close the book. The story-within-a-story device is occasionally confusing. Still, there is plenty of information about Greek myth and the details of Athena's life. The book is beautifully illustrated with color photographs of Greek artifacts from the British Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Factual information is included in captions that both extend the story and give depth to the book. For a more historical look at this goddess, turn to Nancy Loewen's Athena (Capstone, 1999).
