4.0 out of 5 stars quiet devastation, March 6, 2007
This review is from: Bright Hunger (American Poets Continuum) (Paperback)
It can be a problem with reading poetry to encounter poets who repeat the same linguistic gestures again and again, but Irwin takes the same handful of objects--trees, sky, clouds--and creates an emotional landscape of quiet devastation, the poems' speakers small inside a world whose essential mechanisms are largely unknowable. This concentration of concerns, coupled with beautifully constructed lines, mean that, for me, Mark Irwin is one of the most affecting poets out there.
