This recording is probably the best example of Max Roach's work with string quartet, but it is unfortunately marred by digital recording flaws throughout. A thorough remastering and then a reissue is called for here.

...so I found a box of old, old cassette tapes I had recorded decades ago. Rummaging through the box I came across a cassette marked simply," Shorter/Roach." Naturally, I knew it was saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Max Roach. I found my old cassette player and listened to the tape. I recognized all of the Wayne Shorter songs (Witch Doctor, etc) but I could not recognize the two sensational songs by Max Roach. One was a slow, but smouldering ballad and the other was an incredible tour-de-force of drums, strings, bass, trumpet and saxophone. I mean I couldn't get the melody of the ballad out of my head for weeks and everyday I listened to the up-tempo tour-de-force cut it was like being kidnapped and taken on a wonderful musical adventure. I've listened to jazz most of my life but this particular piece was a spectacular display of Max Roach's rhytmic intensity, timing, daring and his delicacy. So, I hunted, searched, listened, and tracked down both the album and the names of these two tunes that I didn't know the names of, but I knew the artist: Max Roach. Turns out that decades earlier I had recorded," Tribute to Duke and Mingus" and "Double Delight" but had only now found time to actually listen to the songs. Both are from this album, BRIGHT MOMENTS which, as I eventually found out after purchasing the CD, is a masterwork! The way Roach is able to intergrate the full intensity of his Drums with the string section and the incredible contributions of the trumpet, sax is just astounding. The song "DOUBLE DELIGHT" is just such a wonderful reinvention of Jazz; the arrangement is totally surprising and inspiring as well as the dynamic shifts in groove and harmony- You'll never hear anything like it because you've never heard anything like it. This is an incredible artistic adventure from one of the greatest to play the skins... Do yourself a favor and discover this treasure like I did.
