Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-K—Bright Stanley wakes one day to discover that the other fish in his school have swum on without him. While searching for them, he meets a cranky lobster, a shiny pearl, and a frightening shark that chases him into a cave. When he's brave enough to come out of hiding, he is reunited with his friends. The story is slight, but sweet. The colorful cartoon illustrations are simple and cheerful, and Stanley and his pals are decorated with shiny gold-foil scales. The text is occasionally lost against the dark backgrounds. An additional purchase that may appeal to fans of Marcus Pfister's "Rainbow Fish" books (North-South).—Amelia Jenkins, Juneau Public Library, AK

I bought this one because we got Bright Stanley and the Cave Monster as a gift and I got tired of reading it so I ordered this one to change it up. My 2yo likes it but I really don't. We were given The Pout Pout Fish as a gift recently and that book is much better if you're looking for a fish book for the preschool set. My son really likes the foil pictures in Bright Stanley though.

Our son is 16 months old and keeps picking up Bright Stanley over and over for us to read to him! He loves this book and I think it is pretty cute too. Like the other reviewer, we also use this as an opportunity to ask our son "where is the fish?" or "show me the shark" and learn about things in the sea. The bright hologram foil on the fish is really cool, and doesn't just appear on the cover. Every picture of Stanley has the foil on him. Sometimes the text is hard to read on the dark blue ocean background but the colors are very rich in the illustrations. The story is simple and somewhat short, but for very young kids or a quick bedtime story it is perfect.

I wish it came in a board book because my son has already torn a few of the pages. Other than that, I think it will be a favorite for years to come.

*update* 3/6/13- this is still one of my personal favorites. Though tattered and torn, this book still holds interest for my boy now 4 and my girl who is 2. I love the shiny fish and so do they! My husband and I enjoy making silly voices for the mean lobster and humming the Jaws theme to add suspense about the shark. Great book. Saw another bright Stanley book in my kid's Scholastic order form but it only came as a set with a bunch of other books I don't want so I came back on Amazon to find it. I didn't realize we've had this book so long. It was a cheap find at a Ross store and I'm glad I happened upon it. I gladly would have paid full retail for it.

My 2 year old son loves this book. While reading it we ask him questions like: "Where's the lobster?" or "How many friends does Stanley have?" This book has provided many learning oportunities for us besides being a cute story.
