Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Look! Up on your TV screen! It’s a DVD. It’s a game. It’s Marvel Super Heroes! From the folks at Brighter Minds comes a game about classic superheroes and villains--specifically aimed at the younger crowd of 6 to 12 year olds. If you have an older child already familiar with these characters and if they have a younger sibling who has never heard of even one, they will both be able to play and learn with this DVD game.

Dr. Doom has let 25 nefarious villains escape from behind bars. It’s up to players--using the Wolverine, Storm, Captain America, and Spider-Man movers--to capture these bad guys again. Snaring a villain is done through rolling the die, moving that number of spaces on the game board, and then seeing which of the seven "mini-games" you’ll be trying to beat. These games come on the included DVD with you controlling the action via remote control, and challenges range from being the first to identify a slowly appearing villain and a game of memory to answering trivia questions and correctly lining up body parts of superheroes.

Villain Locator game
In the Villain Locator game, players must name the escaped evildoer (this is Dr. Octopus) before time runs out and opponents have a chance to guess.

The game’s graphics are beautifully detailed--from the bad guy cards and the sturdy game board to the DVD’s content. Clips from Marvel animated television shows like X-Men and Spider-Man, hours of brand new animation, and more than 300 facts and trivia questions keep this game entertaining for more than just a few rounds. Allowing fans of these classic characters to save the city and become heroes themselves is just an added bonus.

Subway Scramble game
Correctly line up the top, middle, and bottom body sections of your favorite superheroes in the Subway Scramble mini-game.

Probably the greatest thing about this game, though, is its versatility. While it includes four player pieces, you can play alone, with up to four individual players, or with teams. You can also choose to not use the game board by following what Brighter Minds calls the "In the Car" instructions. (As this implies, this game can be used on portable or in-car DVD players as well, making it a great traveling game or time-filler in between errand stops.) There are also three different skill levels--sidekick, hero, and superhero--that allow kids who may not be as familiar with the characters to play at an easier level, while someone with more knowledge can participate in the same game at a harder level, evening the playing field some. Lastly, you can choose to play a short or long version of the game by determining at the beginning of the game how many villains a player needs to capture in order claim victory.

This review is from: Marvel Heroes DVD Game (Toy)
I was disappointed with this DVD game. The computer graphics used in it were nice, but the content was dull.

It's comprised of 7 or so mini games. Some examples are :

- a Memory-style card matching game. This was okay.

- a simple Maze game in which you must navigate your way by making 2 decisions. This was too simplistic

- a Scene It style game of remembering details from a 1990's era Marvel cartoon. The cartoons were dull as were the questions.

- a trivia game (my favorite part since it used obscure questions in the hard level)

- a roof top jumping game. This was poorly executed. You're given a 1st person view of jumping off the roof (Is this such a good idea?). And then you must press a button at the right time without much of a visual cue.

As rewards for finishing a mini game, you are given a short animation clip of villains getting jailed. The animation is 3D but all the characters are 2D clip art. So you will see your favorite characters shrinking, growing, or rotating.

There is no educational aspect of this game besides trivia of Marvel superheroes.

The board game aspect seemed to be thrown in to make it more valuable. Basically, you roll a die to move around a board. When your cardboard character reaches a square, you play that mini game on the TV.

One nice aspect was the implementation of 3 difficulty levels to let people of different ages play. The DVD also keeps score.

But if you really wanted to see a fun use of Marvel characters, buy the video game Marvel Ultimate Alliance instead. You could play that for dozens of more hours.

My husband and I both love comic books, and so does our niece (6). This game is fun and engaging, it has various levels for older and younger players. It is a great game for any fan-family who loves their marvel heroes!
