I was particularly interested in the chapter on the virtual classroom. I know the allure of multitasking when sitting in front of a computer, making it very difficult to concentrate fully on a single presenter for an extended period of time. The author highlights the critical importance of having some type of interaction every 2 to 3 minutes to maintain interest and using a range of other attention-grabbing techniques. Distance learning is particularly difficult when video or audio presentations are pre-recorded, so that there is no live human interactivity.
Before reading the book I was concerned that it might be too exuberant for my tastes. I am really more interested in teaching postgraduate law students in a compelling and memorable manner than in "unleashing brilliance". I was pleased to find plenty of helpful ideas in the book applicable to my situation. The author has taught Master of Science and MBA classes, so many of the techniques she suggests are as applicable to a well-educated sceptical audience as much as they are to any other class of learners.
Finally, it is here, the book that we've all been waiting for. Brilliance by Design is not just a great idea explained in an inspiring context, it is a wealth of material made accessible and applicable for anyone who truly wants to facilitate learning, "bring out the best in yourself and the best in others." More than just a book, this is a handbook that you will use and abuse because it is filled to the bursting with tools, templates, and so many strategies it is astonishing. Talk about real value! Vicki Halsey has turned over her own best practices, secrets, teaching tools and strategies, as well as those she has learned from others and given them to you to use as is or to revise and massage to suit your purpose, your teachable moments, and to help your learners experience one epiphany after another...a succession of "Aha" moments...an unending chain of learning that connects and builds into a transformational experience that becomes so much a part of their being, they will pass it forward.
Vicki Halsey has passed it all forward. If you truly want to facilitate the brilliance, the love of learning, and the creativity of learners and "teachers," and that is as Vicki writes, "anyone who imparts wisdom," let Brilliance by Design be your guide. Share the wealth just as Vicki has, and turn your realm of influence into a true learning community.
The format of the book is easy to follow, with reflections, practices, templates, and useful examples. Brilliance By Design is a collection of best practices that can be read cover to cover, then referenced to polish and improve any presentation. It has proven to be a great inspiration to me, and has reinvigorated me to reconsider and energize my learners.
