Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Some of my favorite novels are what I call “men in crisis” books. They are stories of men who find themselves in the middle of a crisis, usually of the relationship kind. Some of the best examples of these works are the early Phillip Roth novels, John Updike’s “Rabbit” series, and many of John Irving’s books. Some newer authors writing these novels are Nick Hornby and Tom Perrotta.

I feel these are important novels for men to read. They touch on issues and emotions men deal with, but never talk about. Unlike women, who talk more about these things than men do, and have magazines where they learn other women have the same feelings, men do not have these outlets. Many of us think perhaps we are the only ones who have these feelings. But we are not. And when we read “men in crisis” books, we find out other men are going through the same things.

This is what I tried to achieve in my new novel, “Brilliant Disguise.” It is about a married man who has his life in order, until it is ripped apart over the course of one summer. His wife leaves him, and he is left living with his mother in law, for whom he has developed a bizarre attraction. Then there are two women at work – one whom he may love, the other who may love him. Then there is the shocking plot twist that will force you to re-read the book to figure out how you missed it!

While the novel is aimed towards men, it is also a book women will enjoy. The book gets into the mind of a man, somewhere women never go. So while men will learn that they are not alone with their emotions, women will perhaps learn what makes us tick, and maybe they will understand and forgive us when we take that occasional misstep with them!

Format: Paperback
I understand this is the author's first novel. This book is very entertaining and enlightening. It was funny, poignant, and gave me (being a woman) insight into the mind of a man in the midst of a crisis.
I really enjoyed some of the main character's quirks and sarcastic observations of the people around him.
I would recommend this book highly and am looking forward to the next one by this new talented author.
