Book Description

Sea Witch July 27, 2009
Jesamiah Acorne, Captain of the Sea Witch, has accepted a government granted amnesty against his misdeeds of piracy, but old enemies do not forget the past. In particular Edward Teach - better known as Blackbeard - has a bone to pick with Acorne. Following an indiscretion with an old flame, Jesamiah finds his fiancée, the midwife and white witch, Tiola Oldstagh, has gone to North Carolina to help with an imminent and difficult birth; the problem, that is where Blackbeard now resides. He must not discover that Tiola is Jesamiah s woman, she will have to hide her identity and her gift of Craft from the black-hearted pirate who has sold his soul to the devil. With Sea Witch damaged and himself wounded by Blackbeard, Jesamiah has to take stock of his situation at his old home in Virginia - but trouble follows him like a ship s wake and he is arrested for acts of piracy on the High Seas. Too much trouble has come too close! How is Jesamiah Acorne to clear his name and overturn a sentence of hanging, keep Tiola safe, put an end to Blackbeard and deal with being haunted by the ghost of his father? Bring It Close moves from the Bahamas to North Carolina and Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia at a swashbuckling pace. There is intrigue, misunderstandings, romance, and adventure all wrapped up in a delightful blend of mystical fantasy.

More About the Author

I have always loved reading - and writing. I wrote stories as a young teenager, never believing I would one day be a published author.
I just so love bringing my imagined characters alive - to me they are very, very real - especially my pirate, Jesamiah Acorne!

'Helen Hollick has it all! She tells a great story, gets her history right and writes consistently readable books!' (Bernard Cornwell)

My Lost Kingdom Series - I AM THE CHOSEN KING (HAROLD THE KING is the UK title of the same book) and its prequel, The FOREVER QUEEN (A HOLLOW CROWNis the UK title of the same book) tells the story of the twilight years of Anglo Saxon England before the Norman Conquest.
Stripping the Norman propaganda from what we think we know of that most famous date in English history - 1066 and the Battle of Hastings, my novels portray all the honour and dignity that history remembers of its fallen heroes.

I am also co-scriptwriter for the UK movie 1066 which is in development.

To balance the serious books I have my SEA WITCH VOYAGES: pirate-based adventure fantasy. A fine blend of Sharpe, Hornblower and Indiana Jones all stowed in the one boat.
Voyage One - SEA WITCH
Voyage Two - PIRATE CODE
Voyage Three - BRING IT CLOSE

"In the sexiest pirate contest, Captain Jesamiah Acorne gives Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow a run for his money" (Sharon Penman)

Charismatic and a charmer of a rogue, trouble follows Jesamiah Acorne like a ship's wake. His "girl" Tiola, is a white witch, one of the Wise Women of the Old Ones of Light. She is loyal and faithful to Jesamiah - but does he deserve her?

If you liked the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and enjoy a good sailor's yarn, then in the words of author Elizabeth Chadwick "You'll love this to pieces of eight".

5.0 out of 5 stars Closer, December 30, 2010
This review is from: Bring It Close: Being the Third Voyage of Cpt Jesamiah Acorne and his ship, Sea Witch (Paperback)
Readers of Helen Hollick are familiar with Jesemiah Acorne, the deeply imbibing, womanising intrepid entrepreneur of the high seas. On this voyage he is accompanied by the wraith of his father who, in a no-man's land between life and death, is especially empowered to right some wrongs he left behind him in the world of humanity.

The plot allows the character of Tiola to grow in immensity and credibility. Hollick achieves the difficult task of bringing supernatural powers to rational acceptance and, I think, her carefully researched episodes about horse health and midwifery have a lot to do with this, coming as they do, before the vision of Tiola's intervention in a naval battle, they help to build our belief in her commanding presence.

I, feminist as I am, would like to see Tiola seriously at odds with Jesemiah's womanising ways, in a forthcoming novel, of course, not to detract from the very winsome love story presented in the series. I would be fascinated to see how she challenges the behaviour that wrecks many a relationship without losing her grip on Jesemaih and his Sea Witch.

Bring it Close is an excellent read. Much to be recommended, based soundly on US Southern History and featuring Blackbeard in a new and amusing way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Thrill A Page!, September 1, 2009
This review is from: Bring It Close: Being the Third Voyage of Cpt Jesamiah Acorne and his ship, Sea Witch (Paperback)
I hated to see it end! And what an ending!! Wow! What a surprise that was!(I will not be giving any of it away!) The entire book was fascinating and Jesamiah is just such a bad boy, smart, lucky, fun and sexy! I just love him and Tiola together! This 3rd installment to the series is just great and I don't know what more to say other than it keeps you on the edge of your seat, laughing, crying, horrified (Blackbeard was so awful), and so very interested! I can see each chapter playing out as if I were actually there thanks to the brilliant writing style! Thank you Helen so much for such wonderful reading enjoyment! I am planning on re-reading Bring it Close again very soon as I am sure I will find something that I may have missed in the first go round. If you read the other books in this series this is a MUST! If you haven't then get them all!! I am so looking forward to the next Sea Witch Series book from Helen! Bravo!!
