a very pleasant surprise, August 22, 2002
i recently moved across the country and, while packing, joyfully rediscovered my madder rose albums. "bring it down" was a staple of my freshman year in college and it thankfully sounds just as good 9 years later. the songs don't sound dated at all and this album quickly came back to be one of my favourites, especially for driving around in my car. isn't it great when you find out that you still love a band years later? the song "sugarsweet" is hypnotic, kind of understated and edgy at the same time. i also love "waiting for engines." i would recommend this band to anyone who is into the so-called "indie music" scene and is looking for still another amazing yet overlooked band that deserves a lot more attention.

Beautiful and strong, November 7, 2000
As with Bettie Serveert's Carol van Djiyk, i've always admired the sheer grace that you can hear in Mary Lorson's voice. Even when she is singing the most heart-aching of the tracks, you can still hear the undertone of defiance and strength. Add to that the musicianship of Billy and the boys behind her, and the excellent, varied arrangements, and you have an album that can keep you warm on a dark, lonely night, or just as happily be blaring from the car stereo on a long summer drive.

Finally!, August 22, 2011
It was the early 90's when I just recorded 45 minutes of a pretty good show on WVFS, Florida State's station. At the end of one side, a song played for 3 & something minutes & then got cut off. I moved west, playing that tape like a mix tape and that song haunted me. To this day, almost every time I listen to it, I fall back on the nearest couch or bed and trance out. I have played that song for all the roommates I've had working seasonally across the West, over a decade, had it played on the radio, taken it to Portland record shops, emailed and MP3 I made of it to friends, asking everyone what it was. Lots of guesses, but nothing. Then Shazam showed up! The song stumped it... That was a year ago. But tonight, Soundhound nailed it. It's been 20 years of wondering if I'd ever figure it out. I can't believe how much it's haunted me. I am so looking forward to hearing more of this Madder Rose as the album comes in the mail AND I will finally be able to hear the end of the song I know now as Waiting For Engines.
So my most enthusiastic five stars ever for an album of which I have only heard one song, and not even the whole song at that.
