More melodic, less pyrotechnics,
By
This review is from: Bring 'Em In (Audio CD)
I have to admit that I have a fondness for the explosive side of Buddy Guy. When he's locked and loaded, he is a true weapon of mass destruction. That's why it took me awhile to adjust to the soulful, melodic side of Buddy that this album exhibits so beautifully. He's just reminding us that he can play with style and taste in addition to horsepower. If I have a beef with the album, it's the "and friends" concept that's being beaten to death in the music industry. People like John Mayer, Tracy Chapman and Carlos Santana certainly don't bring shame to an album, I just question why they're needed. I guess maybe as a sales booster but people like Carlos and Buddy should be above that by now. They're certainly earned their stripes in my book.

Prescription Strength Blues,
This review is from: Bring 'Em In (Audio CD)
This CD should come with a WARNING:
This is prescription strength Chicago Blues and is not for use by those on medication for high blood pressure, heart disease, or if you've recently been shot by the vice-president of the United States. Transparent platform pumps and stripper pole sold separately. (But recommended) With a vocal range that would make Al Green turn green, guitar licks that inspired Jimi Hendrix, Clapton, and Page -- this CD is the Chicago legend's crown jewel. He doesn't make any attempt to recap his career here -- he just cranks out funky mo-town rockin blues like he has for 50 years in a 'grab-your baby and hold on tight' groove that doesn't let up from beginning to end. Turn on the disco ball, break out the leather, the lingerie, the blindfolds and scarves -- and baby take off your clothes but put on this CD first and you will instantly be 20 years younger and 20 pounds lighter and you will blow your man's mind. Buddy even out-funks himself with 'What Kind of Woman is This' and puts a whole new hue to blue on 'Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed'. I've been playing for 20+ years and when I hear guys like Buddy play I want to play until I die and hope that day never comes. Pay no attention to the nay-sayers and haters... this CD rocks, grooves, swings, sings, and bleeds blue. Life is good.

A Living Legend,
By mpbcp "mpbcp" (thornwood, ny United States) - See all my reviews

This is an excellent addition to anyone's Buddy Guy collection. Most of the songs are rock solid cover versions of great tunes like "Cheaper To Keep Her" and "On A Saturday Night" and the songs with guest artists show off different sides of this Living Legend's enormous talent. Not a bad song in the bunch. My only minor complaint would be that there is only one original composition by Buddy Guy (that explains the 4 rather than 5 stars), but the guitar solos are explosive and the song selection is wonderfully varied.

Buddy Guy's latest is fantastic! He translates his heartbreak, struggles and joy... in a very real way. The duet's with Tracy Chapman, Carlos Santanta and John Mayer were especially a treat. Well worth every penny, a must have to any Buddy Guy collection.

Leave Buddy Alone!,

They dog Buddy out when he did Sweet Tea saying he was ridin' the Fat Possum Train, and now they say hey Buddy we don't like the guest artitst. Hey Buddy keep doin' what your doin'! This is some great blues, slick licks, and some great guest stars, doing great songs! Yea it may be a bit over produced but hey it is Jive Records. But to flat out call this a dud? Well you would have to be a dud! Go on and buy it you won't regret it!!! The Bandit
Buddy does blow this album away when he is live, but I still feel it's worth the 12 or 13 bucks. I like the reviewer that said if you were a real Buddy Guy fan you would buy the CD without reading the reviews, I agree! I bought it the day it came out I have spun it about 6 times and it grows on me more and more. I just love having a huge collection by Buddy, Freddie, Stevie, BB, Albert and more. IMHO it's not as good as Sweet Tea!!!

Why isn't this wonderful album on radio?,

I've been listening to this CD all day and like it a lot. Buddy Guy plays with inventiveness, rawness, spit and fire that will hit your senses and emotions. Just put on the scorching track "Cut You Loose" and you will hear why he's still the Stratocaster master. The whole album has some of the coolest guitar I've heard in a long time. It's bluesy, kick ass, funky and soulful. Guy's voice is as good or better than ever. Listen to the wrath and jealousy of his vocals on "I Put A Spell On You." Or the polish of his falsetto on "Now You're Gone." Or the sex oozing on "I Put A Spell On You." Or his soul on "Ain't No Sunshine" and "Do Your Thing." It hardly matters what type of songs Guy plays, since he is dazzling on most tracks. And he gives new meaning to cover songs, just as he did when he covered John Hiatt's "Feels Like Rain" years ago. The album has great guest artists too, including Carlos Santana, Keith Richards, Tracy Chapman, Anthony Hamilton, Keb Mo' and John Mayer. "Bring Em In" may not be as exciting as one of Guy's fantastic live shows or as rock oriented as Stone Crazy, but it certainly won't disappoint you and the production is sharp. The album is good for making passionate love or just for easy listening. But if you need a punch in your gut, I Put A Spell on Your or Cut You Loose will do the job.
Of all the blues guitarists who influenced the 1960s rock legends, Buddy Guy came closest to creating the guitar template that helped shape younger players, from Eric Clapton to Jimi Hendrix. Yet the musician so deserving of all these rave reviews is very likely unknown to many of you because, by the time people appreciated what Guy was playing, his biggest fans Hendrix, Clapton and company had copied his ideas and riffs. Sadly, many people still don't own a Buddy Guy album or understand what they've been missing.

Really setting the record Really Straight this time,
This review is from: Bring 'Em In (Audio CD)
- First, THE "BRING EM IN" ALBUM IS OUTSTANDING AND HIGHLY ENJOYABLE. Listen to sample songs on buddyguy.com and on buddyguy.net (the album is as good or better than those sample songs). This album aims to please and for the most part does. Buddy Guy's exceptional vocal and guitar performances are better than what's on some of Amazon's music top-sellers. Let's not unfairly give the album a low rating because we have a beef with "real Buddy fans" rating the album 5 stars. Or because a few hardcore blues fans feel that some songs are too "mainstream" for their personal "blues taste". For almost 50 years, the versatile Buddy has given his diverse fans a variety of great music as well as live performances, and continues to do so today. Buddy Guy is not "God's gift" to one or two hardcore fans; he is God's gift to music and to all music lovers who have the good sense to check his music out.
- Second, Big Tony, YES, JIMI HENDRIX DID TAPE BUDDY GUY, and was partly influenced by Buddy even before meeting him. "Real Buddy fans" get their facts right and don't make up untrue facts about Buddy. The official jimi-hendrix.com website reported on Buddy (who was the headline act) at Jimi Hendrix's 60th birthday tribute concert: "With the audience now worked to fever pitch, Bob Hendrix called Buddy Guy to the stage. The concept of Guy, whose classic sides for Chess Records had influenced Hendrix during his early career, performing with Jimi's Band Of Gypsys was eagerly anticipated by all. Bob Hendrix summed it up perfectly when he explained that THE HENDRIX FAMILY WAS CALLING ON A LEGEND (BUDDY GUY) TO CELEBRATE A LEGEND (JIMI HENDRIX). Guy told the crowd of first meeting Hendrix at a 1968 jam session in a New York nightclub. Hendrix asked if he could record the proceedings on a Nagra tape recorder that had been supplied to him by filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker. 'Who are you?' queried Guy. Hendrix introduced himself and would later join Guy onstage." Furthermore, the Buddy Guy's Legends club (Chicago) has a TV playing the film clip of Hendrix taping Buddy's stage performance. In addition, the Martin Scorsese blues concert movie "Lightning In A Bottle" has another clip of Hendrix sitting in the front-row audience grooving to Buddy showmanship on stage! Hendrix himself has said "heaven is sitting at Buddy Guy's feet and listening to him play guitar," and that he cancelled his own concert to go see the blues master perform. Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards and many other "guitar superstars" have also said Buddy was a big influence on rock music and on them.

Great, solid blues cd. Near perfect tone from Mr. Guy, with songs that are rife with emotion, and weigh heavily on the listeners conscience. I like the guest work, Santana is right on and the John Mayer duet is powerful stuff.

I have been listening to Buddy Guy for 35 years. He is the best blues guitar player there is. The first ten times I listened to this album I didn't get it. Buddy Guy doing "Lay Lady Lay"? Now after three months I love this album.
Buddy Guy shows here that he is much more than a blues player. He is a great musician and singer. There are great blues here, "Somebody's Sleeping in My Bed", "Cheaper to Keep Her". But this is more than a blues album. The variety is awesome and every cut is primo. Two old Creedence tunes that rock. R&B Ballads from Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding and Isaac Hayes. The best song on the album is "Cut You Loose". The guitar work sounds like some of Hendrix best. Guy sings with the growl of a mean old man who's been done wrong for the last time. This one cut is worth the price of the album. The album is a great music experience. Thank you Buddy Guy. |
