About the Author

John H. Tullock holds a master’s degree in zoology.  From 1987 to 1995, he operated a retail and mail-order aquarium business featuring saltwater fish, invertebrates and everything necessary to maintain them in the home.  He is the founder of the American Marinelife Dealer Association and served on the steering committee that created the Marine Aquarium Council. He is the author of eight previous aquarium books, including Natural Reef Aquariums (TFH) and Your First Marine Aquarium (Barron’s).

I was very impressed with this book. It covers a lot of information starting from what you need to consider while deciding if you and your family are even ready to add an aquarium to your home. Then it goes on to helpful information like whether you want a fish only or mini reef, costs involved, choosing the right tank, choosing a theme, decorations, live rock, how to set up the tank, how to cycle the tank and which tests to perform, info on some of the most popular fish and how to choose the right ones, how to choose a good dealer and what questions to ask them (and they list the answers you should get to tell if the dealer is good or not), and how to keep your fish healthy. And that's only the things I can think of off the top of my head!!

There's just tons of excellent info and some common sense tips that may not have occurred to you along with helpful charts that you can photocopy and use. Very helpful and worded in a way that was very easy for a beginner like myself to understand. Definitely invest in this one if you're just starting out. You won't regret it.

I purchased this book because my boyfriend and I are looking into starting up a saltwater aquarium. This book is very helpful with tons of details on everything from setup to choosing fish. One of the most helpful sections includes eye opening facts on how costly saltwater aqariums can be both in terms of money and in terms of time needed to maintain them. This book is extremely worth the price! I would suggest it to anyone looking into starting a saltwater aquarium or anyone who is trying to decide if saltwater aquariums are for them
