Editorial Reviews

2008 album from the Jazz musician. Funk music has been a passion of Culbertson's since his youth and on this album, he is bringing the Funk back along with musical friends Bootsy Collins, Tom Scott, Sharon Jones, Ronnie Laws, Maceo Parker, Gerald Albright and many other musical allies.

I received my copy earlier today, and what can I say? This is the perfect cd for me as a huge fan of funk. And I liked Brian alot even before this one....Just the list of wellknown funky musicians say anything you need to know. It's hard not to move when listening to this music, the songs themself and the production is perfect. 5+ stars!

Brian goes back to Funk inspiration for this album that mixes the Smooth with Funk.
"Always Remember" is a smooth-ish groove with Brian's clean piano work a delight.
Equally delightful is the highly melodic "Let's Stay In Tonight".
On the Funk side "Funkin' Like My Fathers" and "The Groove" have a P Funk flavour with co-producer Bootsy involved.
Kool & The Gang's "Hollywood Swinging" and Tower Of Power's "You Got To Funkifize" are given strong re-workings.
The killer track and strongest cover is Donny Hathaway's "Everything Is Everything", which retains much of the grittiness of the original.
An impressive cast includes Ronnie Laws, Gerald Albright, Ledisi and Musiq Soulchild on vocals, Maurice White, the leader and founder of Earth, Wind & Fire, among many others.
Overall,it's a fun album, but not his best.
Enjoy!

Surprisingly likeable CD. A little instrumental jazz, a little funky, some with vocal and others not. But this is a nice tribute to that era with a touch of his own style. I have to say the first track threw me for a minute I was unsure if I would be able to get into the CD. But it recovered on the second track and got stronger thereafter. Loved the version of Hollywood Swingers w/Musiq & Albright and The World Keeps Going Around w/Ledisi, who is a wonderful vocalist who truly shines on this track. This was quite enjoyable, not too over the top but mellow funk. Definately for Ole School lovers who don't mind a little variety/twist.

Brian Culbertson - `Bringing Back The Funk'
Album review by Mike Parlett

Born in Decatur Illinois in 1973 now based in Los Angeles California, keyboardist, trombone player, drummer, bassist and producer Brian Culbertson has always been the youthful and jovial fresh face of the smooth Jazz scene.
Over the past number of years Brian has earned his stripes as a pioneer in the field of goodtime funky cool jazz. His total live performance experience, regular cavorting and jumping around the stage at his concerts with trombone in hand, grins, funny faces and poses with incredible playing from behind the Roland keyboard from where he stands show him as the true all round visual and musical artist as well as an entertainer.

Whenever I have attended any of the shows, I have always been immediately impressed with not only the musical talent Brian manages to surround himself but also the sheer joy everyone appears to be having on stage while playing the music. The shows are highly entertaining, always packed and are totally suitable for anyone of any age or musical persuasion.
Brian is definitely a jazz musician that does not take himself too seriously but seeks to make his music as accessible to the general pubic as possible. He has worked alongside some highly respected names in smooth Jazz including Dave Koz, Jeff Lorber, Rick Braun, Richard Elliot, Marcus Miller, Patti Austin, and Bob James to mention only a very few.

`Bringing Back The Funk' is a step in a slightly new direction for Brian in musical content, performance and presentation. The album is a collection of some classic and lesser-known funk anthems from across the last couple of decades along with some inspired original material.

A great throwback to my days in High School jazz band. This album is very tight. It sounds like they've been playing together for years. But the main reason I love this album is that it introduced me to the genius of Gerald Albright on Hollywood Swinging. He is just incredible on sax, and it shows the level of talent that contributed to this album.

This Cd has a 70's vibe, with an influence of rock and soul from the Bay area. On a couple of the tracks the music was close to some of the Tower of Power's horn sections sound. This is an excellent album to listen to while driving down the highway.

As I have been categorized as a 'Funk-Jazz Bassist' I feel in love with this offering from Brian. A friend had let me borrow the CD, which did not have the case/cover, and after several 'listens' I knew there was something extra special about, as I heard the 'stylings' of who I believed were some of my favorites artists. It made me purchase the CD, and even though Bootsy Collins' input is very obvious I was pleasantly please to see that my 'ear' had previously detected the likes of Maurice White, Ronnie Laws, Gerald Albright, and Ray Parker Jr' as I listened. This is a mega-project that I am sure 'funk-jazz' lovers will appreciate.
