Editorial Reviews

Saving Abel combined meat and potatoes rock with bombastic hooks to land a hit Album with their debut in 2008. Their 2nd album Miss America also had a big impact and futher broadened their audience.
The raw and down home feel of the melodic hard rock all over the new album Bringing Down The Giant recalls the most vital and energizing aspects of the humble beginnings of the band. Bringing Down The Giant is the type of album that fully delivers on the promise of everything that has come before with Saving Abel.

I have waited for more Saving Abel since I wore out listening to Miss America repeatedly on my drive to and from work the last couple of years. Miss America is one of the best rock albums in my extensive music library. I consider myself a rock n' roll fan who enjoys good lyrics, good singing, and loud but melodic guitars with a bit of an edge, and the first two albums had all of that and then some. The singing from Saving Abel is always great and heartfelt, but this album disappoints because it lacks that edgy guitar sound for most of it. "You Make Me Sick" is by far the best track on the album. It finally musters up enough steam with the patented driving guitar sound by the end of the song, but not before we have to sit through a twangy banjo intro.

The title track is probably the second best song, but doesn't come near any of the tracks on the first two albums, IMHO. The rest are decent sounding songs that just seem to be missing something. I don't know if they had someone else produce this album who told them to take their foot off the gas and slow down a little, but that's what it sounds like. Hopefully the band will wake up and rock again before it's too late.

Don't get me wrong, Bringing Down The Giant is a good album by itself, but it doesn't live up to the expectations created by the first two releases. Except for the two tracks mentioned, all the other songs have about the same tempo and style (without great guitar parts), which makes it all kind of sound a like. If you're a Saving Abel fan, you'll like this album, but you'll probably find there's something missing.

I'm not going to belabor my review, "Bringing Down The Giant" is a disappointment from a band I have really grown to like-- a lot. The edge and energy that was present in their self-titled album "Saving Abel" is all but gone. I'm not sure who they're trying to sound like, but it isn't the same band. Save your money until Amazon puts it on sale for $2.99, it won't be long.

I loved their first album and most of the second. Sadly the trend seems to continue as I like less of this than the previous one. They're a great live band but I honest only like about 2 or 3 songs on this one, they mostly get 3 stars because I really do WANT to like it.

Saving Abel has been one of my favorite bands since they came out with their debut CD (I've seen them twice in 3 years in concert), and I would have to say that this album doesn't disappoint despite a slight shift in style. The debut album had a mix of soft and steady and rocking hard music, with a more aggressive sophomore album (just fine with me.) This album as a whole seems to take a step back with slightly more refined lyrics and less guitar sound at times. I would definitely say the more country rock aspect that has always lingered in the background (much like Theory of a Deadman) is still very familiar with this album and may even take more of the forefront in parts or some of the songs. Unlike one of the previous reviews I found this album to have a completely different sound than a lot of the mainstream rock/hard rock out there, which I found refreshing not only to overall sound, but also as Saving Abel's growth.

Overall Album: (4.5/5)

Track by Track Detailed Review:

1. Bringing Down the Giant (4.5/5) - It isn't my favorite single that Saving Abel has ever released, but I would definitely say that this song has been growing on me since I first heard. Sounds very reminiscent to the previous two albums first songs (Tap Out and New Tattoo) in terms of upbeat and tone setting with some catchy guitar breaks.

2. Michael Jackson's Jacket (3.5/5) - A little different style than anything heard before on a Saving Abel album and might throw listener's for a loop. The song seems to have an uncharacteristic almost country pop beat and they certainly throw it at pop music in this song.

3. Amazing (4/5) - Standard rock ballad, but slightly more upbeat and an all around good song.

Great start to the album with "Bringing Down the Giant" and the next couple of songs are okay but here again the music seems to start running together, these guys are mega-talented but this album doesn't crank it up anywhere near what their first few albums do.

First I am a HUGE Saving Abel fan. These guys have the complete package and their self titled album was just...well....genius. The vocals, lyrics, musical talents, and presentation was pure sensory gratification. The kind of music that gets into your head and is the makings of bands that transcend through the decades. I have burned that music into my soul and was excited to upload "Miss America". I was a little disappointed in that production, not for the lack of talent which was obvious in every song but something just felt ever so slightly lacking. While I have played it endlessly I just could not put my finger on what it was that was missing from the first album. I hesitated for a while before finally uploading their third album after reading disappointing reviews but I just kept wanting more from these guys, I was sensory "Addicted" to them.
Well I have gone through this musical line-up several times here and I have finally figured it out. I believe this band needs new producers, ones that are not taking this band, packaging them up real "Pretty", watering them down, and trying to increase the over all mass appeal. Thus in their eyes creating a larger bottom line profit from them. Over and over I see this happen with great bands and it becomes their undoing. Just like a fine artist, with amazing and unique talents being suffocated by a gallery's intense desire to make a buck off them by mass producing their work, it is so with the music world. The masterful work they could have created is reduced to mass produced "drivel".
Let me say that I love these guy's music, this third album is worth the money just for the shear fact of supporting them back to their true selves. However, these guys will go into a downward spiral if left to continue in this direction.
