Book Description

July 2003
A nostalgic history of the old time hay stacking era, i.e. pre haybaling days, concentrating on the unique home made devices designed to put it up loose.

The book is 8 ½ x 11 format, has 124 pages with over 300 color and black and white photos and comes in a perfect bound cover. A key feature of the book is a survey of the many kinds of derricks devised to stack hay and why the different models were favored in different locales throughout the West. I drove over 20,000 miles through 12 western states collecting data and shooting pictures of what became 17 ways in 4 major categories to stack hay.

About the Author

Author David Asson was born in 1937, the eldest of four children. He grew up on an irrigated farm near Rupert, Idaho. While enjoying the mechanics of farming, his native acumen placed an undue reliance on others for deciding when to plant or harvest. Sensing this limitation may be detrimental to success in agriculture, he opted for a career in the city. A BBA from the University of Portland and an MBA from UCLA concentrating on accounting and computer studies, launched a career in business. He became a CPA, apprenticed with two ‘Big 8 firms’, was a principal in a local practice and worked many years in private industry through a consulting firm known as Doubletree Advantage. He once flew a Cessna, still drives tractors, recently floated Idaho’s famous Middle Fork and has 11 grandkids. In retirement, time and interest has turned to writing, a little travel and woodworking projects.

This review is from: Bringing in the Hay: A Nostalgic History of Agriculture's Most Romantic Crop (Paperback)
I got this as a gift for someone else, based on a recommendation from
some list years ago, and so I didn't have much time to look at it, but
it was lovely, full of beautiful old pictures and stories. For the
types of people who like Eric Sloane books, in my opinion.
