Excellent Start-up Blueprint,
This review is from: Bringing Home the Baking: How to Start a Licensed Home-based Baking Business (Paperback)
I wish I'd found this book months ago while doing my business plan. It would have saved me sooooo much time with research. My business plan is about 95% completed, but even with the hours of research I've already put in, there was still a lot of information in this book I did not know. I found out how to get a website for $2000 less than I thought it would cost me. My estimate for a website is now only $55 a month and that's it. I hadn't heard about organizations that "nurture" small businesses until they get on there feet. And, there is even information on how to set the price for your products. This part just by itself was a major help for me. I had no idea of how to go about doing that. Especially with factoring in the cost of utilities.
I was at a lost of what to do next in order to finish my business plan. And then I happened upon this book. This book really helped me considerably.

No home baking in California,

A good book, but it isn't applicable in California where the Health Deparment will not allow anyone to sell food prepared in a home kitchen. In fact, many schools in the Los Angeles county are no longer permitted to sell homemade items at bake sales.

This is a very informative book about the ins and outs the author learned about starting her own business. It is info any aspiring bake-shop owner could use. Each individual MUST find out their own state laws, regulations, codes, health dept. expectations on their own. No one author could do a write up on all 50 states, especially when those laws change annually. So you must do some of your own leg work.
A very easy read with a lot of information packed in.

Just make sure you have a seperate kitchen in your home or health inspection won't pass. If I knew that, I wouldn't have bought the book. But its a good read.

Less a book, more a pamphlet,

Not worth the price. It has some very basic information you could find anywhere on starting up any small business, and it is mostly geared towards mail-order. It doesn't offer much information on in-home cake decorating, dessert catering, or any other ideas for a baking business. The second half of the book is basic recipes that anybody who would buy this book has no need for. There are a few bits of good advice here and there, but I shouldn't be able to finish a how-to book on starting a business in ten minutes.

Bringing home the Baking is a well written how-to book. However, I will warn that this book is intended for licensed home baking businesses. It says that in the title, but I purchased this book hoping it might have pointers for those of us living in states that do not permit running a food based business out of your home. The only thing that was useful to me was that it has a list of vendors and distributors, many of which I had not heard of, that sell products at good prices or have special deals on baking supplies, new and used. I would still suggest this book, but only if you are ready to either rent a commercial space, or turn your home kitchen into a commercial space.

This book was chock-full of concise information and sources. It was also an incredibly easy read. The author is entertaining as well as informative. My favorite thing about the book was alternative suggestions to the straightforward home bakery concept. It really helped me to avoid getting discouraged.

This book is absolutely essential for anyone trying to start a baking business. Quincella has done all of the work already and saves you hours and hours of time. She also gives you details you need to know but have not thought of yet! So glad I found this book early.

The book gave great initial information and where to find answers to questions she didn't answer. Basically I found it very helpful, but in a couple cases she just states we should contact someone else to find the answer. If you are just getting started it is a great resource book that will point you in the right direction to find everything you need and need to know.
