4.0 out of 5 stars It's best when it funks, March 19, 2011
This review is from: Bringing It Home (Audio CD)
Bonerama is a New Orleans-based, trombone-fronted, funk band.

They are fun to listen to but they are best to be enjoyed live, and, having a visual of them, is essential to fully understanding them.

This is a "party" band. The 3-4 trombonists are set up front, dancing, gyrating, occasionally singing, but always smiling and giving the appearance that they are having more fun then the audience watching them. The rest of the band... bass, guitar, very muscular drums and sometimes keyboards are behind. They are prominently featured yet the horns are the star of the show

There are no perimeters with this stuff so funk, jazz, hard rock, rockabilly, dixieland, and blues are all fair game. Unexpected covers pop up as well with these horns having an affinity for Led Zep, Hendrix, Black Sabbath and Allman Brothers. Get the picture now?

They are best when they play funk and lock into a groove. The musicianship is top notch, all the way around, but it shines when the whole band is locked into a solid, bottom-heavy groove. While all of their material is good, the funk is when they emerge as a great band.

The absolute highlight is the funked out, totally original and captivating cover of Led Zeppelin's "The Ocean". This song is a scorcher.

"Bap, bap" sounds like something the great Maceo Parker could have cooked up by combining an effectuous popping bass, quick time signature changes, raunchy guitar shredding and, of course, a wall of trombones carrying the tunes.

A 13 minute reworking of Edgar Winter's "Frankestein " invokes the "jam band" concept of the original but takes it to a much higher level. What was an original rock instrumental with flourishes of jazz and funk now becomes a funk opus with flourishes of rock.

This is hardly serious music with a message but, rather, this is what you listen to when you are happy and want your tunes to relay what you are feeling. True to their origin, Bonerama always display their New Orleans' roots no matter what style they partake in.

This is a great work but all of their albums are great with the only distingushing factors being which live work has the songs and covers you seek the most. I feel that "The Ocean" is the best representation of this band so this is where to start

This CD is cooler than cool. It's just sweet. Especially if you like horns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bonerama Blows up the Studio, March 4, 2010

As much as I love Live at Old Point, the impressiveness of this studio album hangs in competition with the band's live tracks -- An impressive feat for any "jam" band.

Bonerama is one of the best modern funk/blues bands out there. BUY THIS ALBUM. Worth EVERY PENNY!
