Editorial Reviews

Review

"The fundamental need for all humans to feel a sense of value, worth and significance is paramount in human pursuit. The historical damage done by years of oppression, displacement and abuse on the black race in the Americas, has made the journey exceptionally difficult. Lathardus Goggins II in this work makes a major contribution to making the journey much easier for this and the next generation."

Dr. Myles Munroe, President/Senior Pastor & Author: Bahamas Faith Ministries

"Lathardus Goggins II has brought "light into a new day," with his intriguing new book, Bringing The Light Into A New Day: African Centered Rites Of Passage. Using strong combination of scholarly insight and quotes from some of Black America's greatest achievers, Lathardus lays the foundation for his instructive summation. Fundamentally, Lathardus uses African Centered Rites of Passage to provide a route for the uplifting of the race. This book will cause you to think, and may cause you to change the way that you think."

Darryl L. Mobley - CEO, Family Digest/Family Digest BABY magazines, and the Family Minute radio show

"Bringing The Light Into a New Day: African Centered Rites of Passage, offers a solid foundation for beginning a Rites of Passage Process. This book was written with the belief that the most valuable asset our community has is our youth."

Elder Emily-Diane Gunter - National Exec. Dir., Rites of Passage Youth Empowerment Programs of America (African American Women On Tour); Author of Superlearning 2000

"Bringing the Light Into a New Day: African Centered Rites of Passage is an important book in the evolving African centered rites of passage movement; and must be read by all students and practitioners of African centered rites of passage."

Paul Hill, Jr. - CEO/President, East End Neighborhood House; Founder, National Rites of Passage Institute- Cleveland, Ohio; Author of Coming Of Age: African American Male Rites of Passage

"Through his book, Bringing The Light Into A New Day: African Centered Rites of Passage, Lathardus Goggins II focuses on developing "family based, community linked" models to light pathways toward cultural self-knowledge.... We can applaud Goggins for this book's well researched content. The book is loaded with contemporary and historical metaphors, ancient proverbs, biblical references, and autobiographical accounts."

Dr. Mwalimu J. Shujaa - Executive Officer, Council of Independent Black Institutions; Director, Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Teaching Africana Studies in Schools, SUNY at Buffalo; Editor of Too Much Schooling Not Enough Education.

"If you are concerned about African American youth, read this book!"

From the Publisher

Our light is our heritage! If we do not bring this light into the new day, then we doom ourselves: at worst, to die during "the night" or at best, to be cast in the faint light of someone else's interpretations, and unable to see our own potential. African Americans families and communities must bring the light (opportunity, hope and wisdom) into the new day, so that the children can see their unique genius. How to the bring this light? African Centered Rites of Passage!

Goggins suggests that we must be active participants in the creation and management of this "light," if we are to benefit from it. To bring the light is to invoke sankofa: to go back and fetch what has worked. Here the implication is to reflect, and study the past, future, and present in order to draw on and create those solutions one needs.

I can't believe I spent hard earned money on this mind-numbing drivel. The authors have little sense of continutity, endlessly engage in fringe-driven hyperbole, and generally have ignored the needs of the average, non-academic reader. I got more value out of the Pet Rock I bought back in the '70's.
