Book Description

September 1999
If you live in or visit Greater Seattle and have a child under three-years-old, you need Bringing Out Baby. This book will help you find the perfect place to take your baby, toddler or tot. Indoor and outdoor playgrounds, music, dance and art classes, gymnastics and more all geared for children under three-years-old are described within the pages of this book. As well as places to take your newborn such as post-partum exercise classes, support groups and infant massage. Then to make your choice easier, the places are detailed as to how they cater to babies' specific needs such as stroller accessibility and nursing privacy. Even restaurants that are amicable to babies are included. In addition to the wide variety of locations individually described, there are lists of public libraries with storytime, pools with tot-swim, cooperative preschools and more. Julia Detering, a mother herself, used her own baby to test locations and determine their attractiveness to youngsters.

The book is designed to help mothers, fathers and all caregivers find places to go and things to do appropriate for their needs and the needs of their small children. It includes Seattle, Shoreline, Redmond, Issaquah, Bellevue, Renton and Kirkland. No other guidebook on the market covers such a wide range of places to take babies, toddlers and tots. Although this book is geared toward children under three-years-old, the information on public libraries, swimming pools, playgrounds, beaches, shopping malls, restaurants and community centers is useful as an over-all reference guide to recreation with children in the Seattle area.

From the Author

When I was ready to venture out with my wee one, I noticed that most people found places to take their babies by word-of-mouth. Thus Baby and I set out on a quest to find activities and places suitable for the very young. When it rained we searched for indoor facilities, and when the sun was out, we explored the outdoors. The more locations I found, the more I realized that other moms, dads and caregivers could use one comprehensive guidebook that included just about everywhere one could take an infant, baby or toddler. My favorite discoveries were the multitude of indoor playgrounds, open gyms and playrooms where caregivers and their tots can play together and meet others. Bringing Out Baby also details classes for babies such music and movement exploration. For toddlers up to three-years-old many activities involving art, gym and music are described. My book includes places special for parents of newborns where babies are welcomed, such as support groups and fitness classes. I have detailed theaters, malls and restaurants considering the needs of people with babies. Also included in my book are descriptions of a multitude of playgrounds and parks especially suitable for babies and toddlers. I had a great time writing this book, I hope you will have fun using it. ENJOY!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Toddler's Tour of Seattle, December 30, 1999

I have three young kids under age 5 and this book has been a life saver for those days when I've just got to get out of the house and don't know where to go. The libraries and community centers are a welcome change to Chuck E.Cheese and I look forward to visiting the child friendly restaurants.

5.0 out of 5 stars bringing out baby, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Bringing Out Baby: Seattle and the Eastside: Places to Take Babies and Toddlers (Paperback)
I used to live in Seattle- We recently moved from there to South Florida, and I was very sad to see that there are no good guide books here like "Bringing out Baby".I had gotten used to carrying my copy in my diaper bag where ever I went in Seattle. I have two very young children and found the book so useful in my everyday outings. It is thorough, yet easy to read and it saved me time-I could bring my children to places knowing exactly what to expect. I wish Ms. Detering knew Fort Lauderdale as well as she knows Seattle- I miss being able to find good places quickly. I have passed my well used copy to a friend and I highly recommend it to any new parent or parent to be in the Seattle area.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another opinion on Bringing Out Baby, May 5, 2000

This book is great for those not familiar with the area and have kids under 3. However, I didn't find the book to be as comprehensive as I thought it would be. I can name two wonderful toddler parks in Kirkland that were not even mentioned in the book. Informing the reader as to which parks have restrooms is VERY beneficial. However, if you have "Out and About Seattle with Kids," skip buying this book.
