Book Description
Raising kids in today's global society is not easy. Are your kids prepared to participate in today’s global society? What are the consequences of them not being prepared? This book provides parenting tips to help raise your kids as intercultural global citizens.
The people we interact with on a daily basis are no longer the people in close proximity to us – our neighbors are now global. How we live, work, learn, and play are all affected by the global transformation of society.
Bringing the World Home: A Resource Guide to Raising Intercultural Kids is a handbook for both parents and educators. It provides 18 specific areas and 85 direct resources to learn about other people and cultures. Helpful tips and resources make it easy to integrate intercultural learning into daily life.
Bringing the World Home helps kids understand who they are, and how they can fully interact in the world. Raising intercultural kids is a way to change the world, promote peace, and most importantly, prepare our children to succeed in global society.
Dr. Jessie Voigts has her PhD in International Education. She is a mom who loves sharing the world with her daughter, and is constantly looking for ways to increase intercultural understanding, especially with kids (it’s never too young to start!). She has lived and worked in Japan and London, and traveled around the world.
Amazon Reviews:
This little book is a gem! I am a university professor and plan to use this book as a supplementary resource in my Methods and Materials Class for Teaching Bilingual and English Language Learners. The class helps teachers create lessons that will improve English Language Acquisition in a cross-cultural or intercultural context. Teachers can never have enough multimedia resources, and this book is full of great ideas for creating inclusive lessons in English. When you get to the end, don't stop there! Follow the link to Lillie's Suitcase, a great website the author's daughter created. In fact, one of the most delightful aspects of 'Bringing the World Home...' is Lillie, who charms the pages with photographs, and even a brief interview. I recommend this book for anyone who spends time with children, and is also devoted to eradicating the dangers of racism, jingoism, and xenophobia without ever using these words. - Dai Adesso
My kids often think that learning is B.O.R.I.N.G. When they see other kids having fun, they often want to do the same. In this book, a girl and her mom talk about ways to learn about the people and cultures in the world. Having that young voice shine through is a great influence on my own kids. We just looked online to find out what Staigue Fort is, and also loved the video resources that were recommended. I especially love the reading list. Thank you to Dr. Voigts and her daughter for bringing the world home! - Janice Edwards
What a wonderful read. While I don't have kids of my own, I do work in a study abroad office at a university. At an age where young adults who were not raised with cultural competence in mind start to realize its importance, college students start to look to their educators for help. The tips in this book are a great starting point for anyone working to internationalize their kids/ students life experience. - cmc05ad
This book is an exuberant exploration of cross-cultural activities! One good idea after the other ... all for less than a buck. And, all the suggestions are manageable from home. It is at once personal and general. A fast read that is inspiring all sorts of family activities at our house ... playing board games, watching international TV shows, eating yummy food ... - Ashley Steel

This book has tons of great resources and ideas for bringing the world to your child (or your child to the world), and I plan to use as many of them as I can with my 5 and 9 year olds. I also LOVE the fact that Dr. Voigts co-authored this with her daughter - priceless!
