Product Description

Product Description

This third generation Brinno Digital PeepHole Viewer is motion activated and uses a 3 inch LCD panel to display who is at your door without alerting them to your presence. The PeepHole Viewer turns a hard-to-see peephole image into a big bright image. The viewer sits on the inside of the door, using a traditional peephole barrel which provides no indication to those on the outside that they're being photographed. With motion activation, the image is captured and stored on the included 4GB micro SD card whether you're home or not, so you can review who's come to your door with a simple push of the button. Images include a time and date stamp. The displayed image is easy to see for people of any height and is similar to that on the display of a digital camera. The viewer compensates for low-light images and eliminates "fish eye" distortion. A press of the button provides a zoomed image, which enlarges the center of the image for viewing facial details. Repeated presses toggle between regular and zoom modes. Viewing angle is 92 degrees (40 degrees in zoom mode). The viewer turns off automatically after 10 seconds to conserve battery life. Battery saving technology allows the PHVMAC12 to last for approximately 9,000 triggers. When the batteries are low, the red light flashes. Replaces existing 12mm peep hole (standard in USA) in doors 1-3/8 to 2 1/4-inches thick. Quick, easy installation. Requires 4 AA batteries (included).

Super quick and easy to install.

As a consequence, you can see the silhouette of someone who is standing at the door but cannot clearly see a picture of the person's face.

If Brinno reads this than I have few suggestions.

It is quite true that this can be installed in minutes, especially if it is replacing an existing peephole and the hole is already there. My issues with this are as follows:

1. 1.3 MP sounds good, but there is a distance between lens on the outside of the door, and the camera element on the inside of the door and there are no adjustments for picture clarity, which is lacking. Cellphones cameras today have much higher resolution and adjustments.

2. My door is plumb and level on both sides and the hole is straight. Yet, this camera seems to look high (more up, than straight). There are no adjustments for this.

3. My preference would be for narrower capture, if that would tighten pixels for better resolution and sharper pictures.

This is a neat gadget. The DVR does what it is suppose to, but 90% of the video or images are useless. This might be useful to see who is at your door, especially if it is someone you know. I would not rely on this for security purposes as what images it does capture are very low quality.

Update: A couple of days before I posted this review, I sent similar comments to Brinno support. As coincidence would have it, I received a reply after this review was posted from the president of Phase3Systems. He asked me to send him some images to help them diagnose this issue. So, stay tuned - there just may be a fix. I will update this again when I have anything to add.

6/12/14 - Phase3Systems tested another unit and sent it to me. I just switched them out and the news is good. First, I have to comment about the service I received. They wasted no time in addressing the issues I raised. I sensed that customer service was a priority - uncommon today.

Unfortunately I'm planning to return this item. But Kids were so exited! And Looks like it's the same problem for everyone. Problem is that this until Brinno PHV MAC 1.3 doesn't have exposure correction, so if your door faces sky or bright lit background than people in the foreground will be totally dark. In fact people in the foreground are so dark that this product is useless. This DoorPeepwhole Video camera has a very nice looking box and image of a sales person knocking on the door, but that is BIG MISREPRESENTATION on Brinno's side. Reality is very different. In reality video that this camera produces is very blurry AND dark (see my youtube video link above). That sales person face on top of Brinno's box is probably taken in studio with professional camera but in reality you'll get a very different quality image. I just don't understand how can company design product and not even test its product how it works in regular environment!? And if they did test it, than it's very naive of them to put this product out for sale knowing it has such a series flaws.

#1 Even in PERFECT lit situation camera's quality is pretty low.
#2 Face is TOTALLY dark because camera exposes for bright sky.

If Brinno reads this than I have few suggestions. #1 Brinno -- you guys need to add a simple way for people to adjust "exposure" so when camera makes "wrong decision" than user can turn knob and adjust exposure. On regular camera's this feature is called "exposure compensation"
And secondly invest little extra and make video higher quality. Than this product will sell.

It really is a nice product with great features and easy to install. My problem was that my door is recessed in an ell-shaped area, and all images were backlit so you could never see the faces. There are some motion sensor LED light bars you can buy, and I bought one, but it was much too bright, pretty much blasting you in the face when you approached the door. Setting it lower returned to the original problem. Additionally, the daylight was "dappled" by the tree in my yard, which pretty much kept the camera triggered the entire day, so it took a LONG time to go through the days' captures.

I love gadgets and was sorry it didn't work out. Customer service was very good, though, and they gave me a full refund since I was within the 30-day period. This would probably work very well on a door without obstruction on the sides.

Those complaining about no audio need to be aware that most states require two-party or all parties notified of recording. It would probably be a violation of wiretapping law in most states for this to record audio, and the need for having a mic on the exterior would give away that this is just a standard peephole.

The camera worked as the manufacture said it would but in my application it failed. The door that this camera was installed faces west and is located at the end of a 'U' shaped walkway about 6' deep. This causes the person who is standing at the door to have a lot of light behind them and dimly lit on their face. As a consequence, you can see the silhouette of someone who is standing at the door but cannot clearly see a picture of the person's face. Unfortunately, Brinno does not provide a way to adjust the picture's contrast to work in this installation. Since I installed this camera to make the wife feel safer and she was unable to see people's faces, I returned it to the supplier. In all fairness, I installed another non-camera, larger optical peep-hole that has the same problem so I am still looking for a workable solution.
