She's Happy, I'm Happy.,

This review is from: Brisingr (Hardcover)
I've never read these books, but I bought it for a friend and she went wild over it, so I'm guessing that says some good things for this, right? No complaints.
However I can note that when I flipped through it, there was none of this "signing" nonsense going on inside. But since I didn't buy it for that, and instead because it was a good price for a hardcover tome, I'm still not complaining about it. Still, it is to be noted - the signature is a lie, so ignore the product title.

Improved writing makes for a better book,

This review is from: Brisingr (Hardcover)
Brisingr is the third book in the series spawned by Christopher Paolini (after Eragon and Eldest) which tells the story or Eragon and Saphira - the last dragon and dragon riders who are free and fight to destroy the evil magician Galbatorix. This volume picks up the story from just after the battle on the Burning Plains and carries it forward for a few weeks. We get to follow the adventures of Eragon, Saphira, Arya, Roran and the others. Since there is clearly another volume coming at some future point, I will not spend much time discussing the plot, but will instead comment on the author.
Eragon made a huge splash because of the story of the author, more than due to the quality of the book. Eragon was writted by Paolini when he was in his early teens and was homeschooled. If you read that first volume, it was clear that it was written by a very young author yet had elements of future promise. Eldest showed some improvements in Paolini's writing skills, but had rough spots when the author (in his late teens and early 20's) decided to take on the subject of romance. In this book we can see significant growth in the writing yet again, and we also see that the author has matured beyond the fumbling romance writing he attempted in Eldest, to actually handle the subject of romance in a more mature, and much more pleasing and realistic manner. Another area of great improvement is in the pacing of the book. The action is much more believable than it was and the descriptions of the various battles that take place is better paced and better described. It made the book a pleasure to read. Indeed it has reached the point where I was always desirous of reading "just one more chapter" instead of nodding off to sleep! That being said, there are still some rough spots: For instance, Roran and Eragon rescue Katrina and then Roran and Katrina ride Saphira back to the Varden camp. Eragon follows on foot and only takes a few days to get back with them. Yet, by then he must quickly marry Roran to Katrina as Katrina has become pregnant. The timing is off, but the pregnancy is clearly needed for the future plotting elements. There are other such mishaps, and many plot elements are way too predictable. Clearly the series is starting to coalesce towards its main climax as all the threads start coming together and as several of the predictions made in earlier books become realities. Those who have read other fantasies will likely be able to predict - with ease - how this will all fall into shape, but I am still looking forward to the final volume in the series to see what additional growth takes place in the writing skills of the author.

Not what I ordered,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I ordered this signed book for my son for Christmas. However when I received it, it was not signed. I sent a message to the seller but he claimed that it was not supposed to be a signed book. The title of the item says Signed! My son was still excited to receive the book but I was disappointed. I rated the book very low not because of the book itself, my son has just started reading it and I am sure he will enjoy it. I rated it low because it was not what I ordered.
