This American adaptation updates the European fairy tale King Thrushbeard to 1815 and relocates the story to Federalist Virginia. In this edition of the well-produced From the Brothers Grimm series, the wealthy heroine (Veanne Cox of Disney's live-action Cinderella) is a mean-spirited snob who insults the admirers handpicked by her hopeful father, calling one "Bristlelip" in reference to his mustache. This haughtiness comes to an end when she is tricked into marrying this suitor disguised as a peddler. Impoverished and reduced to work as a kitchen maid, she comes to respect her husband, à la Kate in Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew. Only this "Kate" learns her humbling lesson in a mere 18 minutes. (Ages 5 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

5.0 out of 5 stars Bristlelip is a refreshing film, April 7, 2001

This review is from: Bristlelip (From the Brothers Grimm) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
In this film, a rejected suitor and frustrated father conspire to teach humility and kindness to the haughty heroine.

When the heroine refuses all of her excellent suitors with insults, the one she named Bristlelip (due to his mustache) advises her father to marry her to the next peddlar to come to the door. The eager father agrees and has a minister waiting when the first peddlar appears. Before she knows it, the girl is married and on her way to a life far from the one she has envisioned. She learns that all she can offer is beauty since she has no other useful skills. As she learns to cook, clean, and sell goods, often unsuccessfully, her husband continues to treat her with patience and kindness despite her sharp tongue.

Finally, Bristlelip reveals himself after getting her to admit that her "peddlar" husband is a good man. All the former suitors are reunited at the wedding celebration where some intricate dances are performed. Don't miss the final scene filmed from the top of a spiral staircase surrounding several circles of dancers. It is a beautiful closing scene in its simplicity.

This film will work well in a classroom study of fairy tales, especially King Thrushbeard, or as a companion piece to Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew."

I had a bit part in this film and the last time I saw it was at the preimre at the AFI theatre in Washington DC when it first came out.

Actuly it is much better than I recall it. Full of warmth and humor a great family or school film.
