The old one was better,

I wanted a replacement for my old Brita pitcher and I wanted something simple, without the need for fancy-shmancy batteries/electronics - after all this is just a PITCHER!
This one was the one most similar to the one I had. However, unlike the one I had before, this one does not keep the lid on when there is water in the reservoir trickling through the filter. This means that you can't use the pitcher easily while it's refilling unless you remember to push the lid down with one hand while you pour with the other. Not doing so will result in a disastrous spill each time as the lid will slip off pouring water all over. Not sure how/why, but the earlier version of this pitcher had a nicely designed fit that this would not happen. Had it been available, I would have purchased it.

Works great, but really big...,

This has worked great for me over the last several years, and I have become accustomed to the great-tasting water I get from the Brita pitcher (yes, you will be able to tell the difference!). I have begun drinking more water because it tastes better, and everyone would agree that is certainly a benefit worth my 4 stars... However, I have a (rather small) side-by-side fridge and with milk, juice, etc., etc., on the same shelf, this pitcher takes up too much room. I am currently shopping for another model of Brita filtration pitcher to replace it with a little narrower profile.

I love the classic because it is good looking and it works well. It doesn't leak and the top doesn't fall off if it is put on right. Match arrow, arrow to arrow. When you pour and your fingers are on the handle it is very easy to rest your thumb on the arrows on the handle/cover, offers security and a nice method of handling the pitcher.
This is a two-stage pitcher, I use it for coffee and tea and cooking. I use a Pur three-stage pitcher for drinking water. For looks and handling, I think the Classic Brita has it all over the Pur but have learned to live with wanting the three-stage process for some things, wish that Brita would consider a three stage filtering system.

I love our pitcher. We used to have water delivery service, but when the prices kept going up, I decided to try the pitcher. I can honestly tell you that the water from the pitcher and the water I had delivered tastes the same, only I'm saving $40+ a month.
I only wish I had tried this earlier!

Durable and works like a charm.
I recommend getting two, because you can have one ready to use and one in the fridge. Also, get the filters in bulk (I got 20 of them at Cosco ages ago). I ran a test a while back using Gatorade on a filter I had planned to replace anyway and it stripped the sugar and color from it! A very light taste remained, but I wasn't expecting reverse osmosis type results.

I HATE this thing.,

First off, no matter how properly or carefully you "secure" the lid, you will often have it pop off, having water explode all over the countertop. Also, its filtering powers are overrated. After my girlfriend purchased this, I did some online research that only confirmed my own opinion. Thirdly, there are charcoal particles floating all around, from the filter. I hate this thing. Really.I'm going back to buying Crystal Geyser.

Follow directions people,
This review is from: Brita 35548 Classic Pitcher (Kitchen)
First off if I remember right you are supposed to let the filter sit in water for a while or run water through it. I have had this for almost a year now and don't have all the paperwork. Anyways there have been multiple complaints of blackish/gray water because people don't realize directions are there for a reason.
This is a pretty simple item, works well and does the job. Since I drink a lot of water I did take off half a star because I have to constantly refill it. It takes two full tops to have the main part be full after its filtered. This means I either have to remember to let is sit and fill up the top again in a few minutes or just forget and run out of water later on (the latter happens more often). My other half a star comes from how it isn't very well sealed. The opening on the top allows for air to enter when it is not in use. Why a big deal to me? Well what this leads to overtime is if someone leaves something that gets rotten or the fridge hasn't been cleaned in a while the taste seems to saturate my water. A good cleaning of the fridge and container has always fixed this up in the past. I have also had roommate complain about theirs getting moldy/mildew. Now theirs had sat for months unused, they cleaned it out and replaced the filter and it is working fine since. Similar situation happened with my girlfriend's Brita and filter that sat for a long time. My suggestion would be for people to clean them out and replace the filter if it sits for a while. There is a lot of moisture stuck in the filter when it sits for long periods of time so I am not surprised that it could mildew. They say to replace the filter every few months anyways.

Bad design,

Whoever designed brita pitchers must re-take the design class. Period. The lid is so easy to fall off during usage. It falls into pieces from time to time.

I followed the instructions exactly. Every pitcher of water (about 20 so far) has pieces of charcoal/carbon in it, mostly gathered around the filter in the top filling tank, some black "dust" smeared around the lid, and a few chunks at the bottom of the pitcher itself and in my water glass! I'm taking them up on their warranty, getting my money back, and buying a different brand.
