5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic product
When I lived in CA we had very hard water. I purchased a fairly expensive two-stage filtration system that mounted under the sink thinking this would be the greatest tasting water ever. I was wrong. 3.0 out of 5 stars digital change filter indicator is misleading
I bought the pitcher with the digital change filter indicator thinking that it would tell you when you've filtered 40 gallons of water. However, it just indicates that the filter needs changing after it counts 8 weeks, regardless of how much water you have filtered.

No thanks, I'll take the manual sticker method and save some money, this is a useless feature.

The water still had a metallic taste. When I tried a Brita Pitcher I was extremely impressed. They are the only company that uses silver oxide pellets in the filter, which act as a water softener and work well with hard CA water. I've since moved to GA where the water is much softer, but these filters make such a noticable difference it is incredible. If you change the filter every 5 weeks or so you will be very happy with the results. I've been using the same pitcher for about 7 years now and it is still in great shape.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as bottled, or better, November 26, 2002

The Brita system is the best I've seen for home filtration. The water tastes pure and clean. I would recommend this for anyone and the savings over bottled water is astounding. In many cases, it even tastes better.

Contrary to advertisement, this system is very quick and easy. We are giving this as gifts to our family this year for Christmas.

3.0 out of 5 stars I like the indicator but not the pitcher., July 21, 2003

The indicator works well although it's a bit over-engineered. It would have been fine to provide a mechanical indicator into which you dial the expiration date of the filter. This would last forever as opposed to the (claimed) 5-year lifespan of the electronic indicator. The pitcher is a different story. Not nearly as well made as other Brita pitchers. The thumb level to open the pitcher is awkward. You must be careful not to fill the reservoir above the indicator line. The hinged flap on the front of the pitcher has enough resistance so that it does not swing open automatically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saves Me So Much Money!, May 22, 2006
I live in military housing that's been around since WW2. Even though they've FINALLY decided to get around to changing the water pipes, I'm still not too thrilled about drinking the tap water.

Anyways, for the past few years, my family has been using bottled water. I estimate that we easily spent about 1/2 a grand on it a year. On just WATER!!!

At the store, I came across one of these and decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did!

For one thing, the product itself is not that expensive, and maintaining it is cheap since you only need to replace the $3-$4 filter every 4 weeks.

I was so impressed with it, I rushed out and bought a 2nd, so I could have one pitcher for the refrigerator and the other available at the counter.

I really like the filter replacement indicater on it. It's easy to set and with how busy my life gets, buying filters is the last thing on my mind. So, it's nice having this there as a reminder.

I also like that it's dishwasher safe. (except for the top part, due to the filter replacement indicater-but that can be easily hand washed) So, every few days, I just put it through the dishwasher and it gets it nice and clean.

The only drawback is that it's hard for my grade school and pre school kids to use, so it's not very kid friendly. So, I have to pour for them every time they're thirsty, but it's not a big deal to me, so I won't dock any stars from my rating.

I highly recommend this for anyone who won't drink tap water!

1.0 out of 5 stars Sure it's pretty. Can I drink "pretty"?, April 13, 2008

Other reviewers have said the same but I will reiterate:

--Filter timer is a joke. It only counts time, not gallons filtered. I don't need this because we already own several calendars.

--Sectional lid must have been designed by the marketing department. They fit together awkwardly and fall off easily. If you try to pour a class of water with even a little still left in the upper chamber, the whole assembly falls apart as you are pouring.

--Lower compartment easily contaminated by unfiltered water.

--My unit grows ALGAE in it after about 10 days. You would think that I must leave it on a sunny window sill, but I don't. It lives on the kitchen counter and I live in the Pacific Northwest where it is cloudy 9 months out of the year. So, anyway, the unit has to go in the dishwasher once a week (hand washing doesn't cut it....algae grows right back). Previous Brita (we've had many) and PUR pitchers did not have this problem.

As a consumer I want to ask: What is so friggin hard about designing a decent water pitcher for cripes sake?!!!

Generally this pitcher demonstrates what is wrong with so many companies that make consumer products. They pay damn little attention to engineering a good product and put all their effort into giving it "purchase appeal" and marketing it.

Try something else.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is good stuff!, November 26, 2003
By A Customer
My husband and I received the Brita as a wedding gift. We absolutely love it. We live in Southern California and the tap water really is awful, we were living off of Arrowhead but now we actually prefer our Brita. The water gets so cold, and filters through so quick and very very easy to use. The amount of money we save off bottled water is incredible. The filters are reasonable and we buy them in bulk at Costco. Its about a years supply for $25.00. You certainly couldn't say that about Bottled Water. I hope you enjoy!

1.0 out of 5 stars major design flaws, June 3, 2005

Sharp design, only problem is they put form over function when designing it. First problem, if the water hasn't drained completely from the upper (non filtered) basin, and you try and pour the pitcher, the unfiltered water pours out with the filtered water. Second problem, when you fill it up, if you let the water overflow the basin, the first thing it does is drain into the filtered basin. In the older round designs, the upper basin was water tight with the lid on, so you could pour out filtered water before the upper basin was empty. If you overflowed the upper basin the water would got over the side and not into the filtered basin. This allowed the user to set it under the sink and not have to stand there for 30 second to shut off the water. They took a definite step backwards with this design. It's really amazing that in the year 2005, such bad product design is still making to the store shelves.

2.0 out of 5 stars Brita Riviera Pitcher with digital change filter indicator, August 14, 2003

The digital change filter indicator was the attraction to this pitcher however I find that the hinged cover over the pouring lip tends to stick. This makes it difficult to get a good stream for pouring. I had the previous pitcher without the digital indicator and probably will return to using it. The filtering system itself is great and I highly recommend a different model of the Brita.
