I wanted a replacement for my old Brita pitcher and I wanted something simple, without the need for fancy-shmancy batteries/electronics - after all this is just a PITCHER!

This one was the one most similar to the one I had. However, unlike the one I had before, this one does not keep the lid on when there is water in the reservoir trickling through the filter. This means that you can't use the pitcher easily while it's refilling unless you remember to push the lid down with one hand while you pour with the other. Not doing so will result in a disastrous spill each time as the lid will slip off pouring water all over.

Not sure how/why, but the earlier version of this pitcher had a nicely designed fit that this would not happen. Had it been available, I would have purchased it.

I'm a college student. This pitcher is big enough that my roommate and I can use both use it without running down the hall to the sink every two minutes. We fill it usually once or twice per day, tops. However, it's not so bit that it won't fit in our tiny fridge. I'm not saying that it doesn't take up a fair amount of space, but it takes up less space (and costs a LOT less!) than stocking our fridge with bottled water.

We've actually started using mason jars to hold our filtered water ($5 for a dozen jars beats $5 each for a decent water bottle), and we can't tell the difference between the water out of this and bottled Poland Springs (but you definitely CAN tell the difference between the filtered water and tap water!). Much more cost effective, much better for the environment.

I was a little skeptical after reading some of the negative reviews, but none of the problems other people seem to be having are difficult to avoid:

-There are a lot of complaints about charcoal bits in the water. However, the only two times I've had that happen were when I didn't follow the directions when setting up the filter, and when I let the filter dry out. As long as I soak and cycle the filter properly and keep enough water in the pitcher so that the bottom of the filter is wet all the time (you can still drain it as long as you fill it up soon), I haven't had a problem. Even if a few bits get in the bottom reservoir (it's normal to have some in the top), it's not an issue. You can't taste them, and we ARE carbon based, after all!

-I'd read that people spill water out of the top reservoir. Solution: wait for the water to filter (5 mins, tops) before you pour water.

-Lastly, I've read that it falls apart when it's being used. I've never once had this problem.

This has worked great for me over the last several years, and I have become accustomed to the great-tasting water I get from the Brita pitcher (yes, you will be able to tell the difference!). I have begun drinking more water because it tastes better, and everyone would agree that is certainly a benefit worth my 4 stars... However, I have a (rather small) side-by-side fridge and with milk, juice, etc., etc., on the same shelf, this pitcher takes up too much room. I am currently shopping for another model of Brita filtration pitcher to replace it with a little narrower profile.

I have been a Brita user for decades. I still have the original style pitcher, what would now be the Classic. This new design, the Classic, has gone backwards.
1)The handle. It is only attached to the pitcher at the top. The first Classic I ordered came with the handle broken off so I ordered a replacement. That's when I was able to see why it broke. The old model handle was attached top and bottom. This one attaced only at the top is just too much pressure on one point. Breaking off is a given, IMO, just a matter of time.
2)The lid. It does not cover the spout. There is a big gap there where things could fall into your filtered water. (The unfiltered part is totally covered.) On the original, there is no cover on the spout either, but the gap is slanted and so small it is not a problem. New design not nearly as good. Glad my old one is holding up so well! Of all the styles Brita offers, I'm hoping I can find a pitcher as good as the original but it is not this Classic.

I love the classic because it is good looking and it works well. It doesn't leak and the top doesn't fall off if it is put on right. Match arrow, arrow to arrow. When you pour and your fingers are on the handle it is very easy to rest your thumb on the arrows on the handle/cover, offers security and a nice method of handling the pitcher.

This is a two-stage pitcher, I use it for coffee and tea and cooking.

I use a Pur three-stage pitcher for drinking water.

For looks and handling, I think the Classic Brita has it all over the Pur but have learned to live with wanting the three-stage process for some things, wish that Brita would consider a three stage filtering system.

First off if I remember right you are supposed to let the filter sit in water for a while or run water through it. I have had this for almost a year now and don't have all the paperwork. Anyways there have been multiple complaints of blackish/gray water because people don't realize directions are there for a reason.

This is a pretty simple item, works well and does the job. Since I drink a lot of water I did take off half a star because I have to constantly refill it. It takes two full tops to have the main part be full after its filtered. This means I either have to remember to let is sit and fill up the top again in a few minutes or just forget and run out of water later on (the latter happens more often).

My other half a star comes from how it isn't very well sealed. The opening on the top allows for air to enter when it is not in use. Why a big deal to me? Well what this leads to overtime is if someone leaves something that gets rotten or the fridge hasn't been cleaned in a while the taste seems to saturate my water. A good cleaning of the fridge and container has always fixed this up in the past.

I have also had roommate complain about theirs getting moldy/mildew. Now theirs had sat for months unused, they cleaned it out and replaced the filter and it is working fine since. Similar situation happened with my girlfriend's Brita and filter that sat for a long time. My suggestion would be for people to clean them out and replace the filter if it sits for a while. There is a lot of moisture stuck in the filter when it sits for long periods of time so I am not surprised that it could mildew. They say to replace the filter every few months anyways.
