A Survey of British-Norwegian Cooperation against the Nazis,
By
This review is from: Britain and Norway in the Second World War (Hardcover)
This volume contains a series of essays by British and Norwegian scholars, nicely edited by Patrick Salmon, on British-Norwegian cooperation against the Nazi occupation force in Norway. The essays cover the transition from peace to war in 1939-1940, the British-Norwegian alliance and its effects on allied strategy, the fostering of a resistance movement, the conduct of special operations in Norway, and the Liberation in 1945.
The essays are typically well-written in form and fascinating in content. Among the highlights: the subordination of the Norwegian navy and merchant marine to the Allied war effort, at shocking cost; the delicate interaction between the British desire to strike at Nazi targets in Norway and the interest of the Norwegian government-in-exile in minimizing the risk of retaliation on a defenseless population; and the agonizing efforts to liberate Norway in 1945 without triggering a bloodbath. The book captures the thoughts of a number of prominent historians on this topic. The book does suffer from the presence of only a single map and no illustrations or photographs. This book is highly recommended to the student of the Norwegian resistance and of the special operations campaign in Norway. The content of the essays may be a bit specialized for the general reader without background in Norway's history.
