Britain's Gentle Highway... a canal adventure in England, Scotland & Wales Filmed and produced by Fran & Brooke ReidelbergerScripted and narrated by Fran Reidelberger Started in the mid-1700s, they served as the internal transportation system for Great Britain's "Industrial Revolution". By the early 19th Century, they crisscrossed Britain covering more than 5,000 miles through major cities and rural hamlets. "They", in this case, are the canals of England, Scotland and Wales. Abandoned by industry today, the canals have become a playground for holiday boaters as well as "home" for many retirees who live year round on their floating homes. In re-visiting and re-filming this unusual and colorful part of Britain, film producers Fran and Brooke Reidelberger hire an old-fashioned canal boat to travel in the wake of history, discover modern engineering marvels, and enjoy the timeless British countryside. . Start at Beeston Castle Wharf in Northwest England at a canal boatyard built in 1775, a year before the birth of the United States. Charles Hardern and family run a small fleet of rental boats and a substantial boat repair facility, both highly regarded. . Climb a flight of four locks at Hurlston -- operating the locks yourself -- and learn about a major water supply for the canal system. . Meet Robert Brown, a retired school teacher who spends his retirement years painting canal scenes. . Visit the Cadbury Company in the Welsh town of Chirk to watch cocoa beans turned into chocolate delicacies. . Cross the Pontcysllte Aqueduct, 1,000 feet long and 126 feet above the Welsh River Dee. . Travel under lift bridges and through a one-lane tunnel -- with no lights! . Attend the International Music Festival in Lllangollen, Wales. . Tour the ancient walled city of Chester with classic half-timbered buildings, Roman history, and modern shops. . Enjoy w

I really enjoyed the beautiful pastoral scenes along the canals. But my greatest pleasure came with the surprising history that accompanied the journeys. Very we'll done

What a cool way to travel! Canal boats look like they provide a unique, relaxing, and very comfortable way to see England. I especially liked the canals in the aqueducts that had a great view. Well worth considering for a vacation possibility.

These travelogues by Fran & Brooke Reidelberger are educational and informative and are not as slick as major filmmakers. Instead they get to the heart of their destinations, enjoying the beauty and the sites. It's often what travel is about, the sometimes slow pace of getting from one place to another, the enjoyment of the individuals and animals one meets on the way, the lovely flowers - take time to smell the flowers! Canal touring appears to be a lovely unique way of touring England, Scotland and Wales, combining history, engineering, botany, and art. Thanks to the Reidelbergers for creating this and other films.

I rather enjoyed this video. The narrator not only covered the basics of narrowboating but also provided plenty of other things such as area attractions and history. For someone who knew very little about narrowboating, I found that it kept my attention but I could see it getting a little boreing for someone who has more experience already.

Quite amateur narration: 1 star; rather scenic: 3 star; professional editing would have brought this to a much higher level.

I have an acquaintance in England who spent the early years of her married life (BC, before children and cats) on canal boats. Hers were apparently a pair: one with engine and supplies, to pull the other, with lodging and amenities. Her stories of canal adventures (including, as this does, forays into Wales) are not as slick as this movie, but they're entertaining and include much more about the 'adventures' canal travel can entail. This video is definitely more idyllic. But what a wonderful armchair travel adventure this is! Check it out.

This is good to watch if you just want to sit back and relax. It does make me want to rent one these boats and spend a week in the British countryside.
