Book Description

Men-at-Arms July 25, 2006
The ‘Confrontation’ between Malaysia and Indonesia in Bornew (January 20, 2006), the war against Indonesian raids across a 900-mile border in some of the world’s worst jungle terrain, eventually involved nearly 20,000 British and Commonwealth troops, with air and naval support; and yet, by mutual consent, it was astonishingly little reported at the time. This ‘secret war’ saw the perfection of SAS jungle tactics; a Parachute Regiment action described as ‘a second Rorke’s Drift’; and audacious secret missions deep inside enemy territory, including the award to a Gurkha soldier of the British Army’s only ‘living VC’ for 40 years.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Osprey's military titles are very subject-specific, allowing for a depth of focus most other general-interest surveys lack. Their latest titles are top picks military reference libraries will appreciate... Britain's Secret War: The Indonesian Confrontation 1962-66 [gives] rare insights and revelations in this unusual study of soldier experiences." -Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating story, February 20, 2008
This review is from: Britain's Secret War: The Indonesian Confrontation 1962 - 66 (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
This interesting account of the military operations that afflicted British forces in Malaysia between 1962 and 1966 mostly concentrate on the problems in Borneo. The English army had only recently suppressed the Malaya emergency in which tnes of thousands of Communist Chinese peasants had tied up some 40,000 British troops. When that had ended in 1960 things began to deteriorate with recently independent Malaysia (ind. 1957) fighting with Indonesia which had become independent in 1945 and was in the midst of a campaign fo ethnic-cleansing against its Chinese minority who were suspected of being Communists.

A series of gueilla fights ensued in which some 20,000 British troops took part. A fascinating story about Southeast Asia, one that was not reported at the time and its rarely spoken about today. An interesting history.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good source of information on a little known confrontation, January 6, 2009
This review is from: Britain's Secret War: The Indonesian Confrontation 1962 - 66 (Men-at-Arms) (Paperback)
Excellent artwork by K.Lyles and a good deal of background information on the conflict from the author. Had the latter aspect been examined further and the links to the Malayan Emergency investigated more thoroughly (to the detriment of some of the less interesting information on purely operational matters), this work would no doubt have deserved a five star review. In any event, highly commended.
