After doing extensive research on rear-facing infant car seats, we narrowed down our choices to the Britax Chaperone and the Chicco KeyFit. Honestly, both are great seats that are very safe and easy to use. In the end though, we decided to go with the Britax Chaperone in red. Here are a few of my thoughts:

1. This is definitely a large car seat, but I feel that the size is justified. With additional safety features like true side impact protection in the seat and the anti-rebound bar on the base, it helps put us at ease that we've picked a car seat that goes above and beyond the minimum standards for child seat safety. It weighs about a pound or so more than the Chicco, but realistically a car seat + growing infant is going to be heavy regardless. Save yourself some trouble and potentially some medical bills and only carry car seats when really necessary (and don't use them inappropriately, such as putting them on elevator surfaces or shopping carts!). Otherwise, use a stroller, infant carrier, etc. whenever possible. It's just not that great for you to carry any car seat around for an extended period of time.

2. This is one good-looking car seat. The red and black combination is absolutely eye-catching, especially when combined with a matching stroller like the Britax B-Ready Stroller 2012, Red.

3. It's very easy to snap in and out of the car seat base, as well as the matching stroller. Press one giant button on the back of the seat and lift up for easy removal from your vehicle. The Chaperone also comes with attachments that allows you to hook it up to a stroller like the B-Ready, so don't lose those!

This car seat is great. It's very highly rated for safety, and it's well made. We bought an extra base, so it's super easy to go from Mom's car to Dad's car. We also use it with the snap n go stroller, so we don't have to wake baby when leaving the car.
This is our second Britax infant car seat, because my older child was sitting in hers (older model) when we were in an accident. Another car hit us from behind. My daughter didn't even notice (until she heard Mommy panic). The car seat was in perfect condition (as far as I could see), but we replaced it as is recommended for accidents. It kept my daughter safe, the most important thing a car seat should do.

This is not meant as a thorough review of this car seat. Others have very detailed information posted, but there were a few things I was unaware of when purchasing that you might find helpful or a deal-breaker:

1. SEAT MAY TIP BACKWARD The car seat tips backwards when placed on a flat surface and the handle is not in the "carry" position, whether baby is in it or not. I have the infant foam insert in currently, so this may not be a problem when baby is bigger (over 11lbs) and the center of gravity is lower, but it's a little scary when you put the handle back to pick up your baby, and BOOM! the car seat tips backwards with baby in it. Luckily no one was hurt, but still! It is even slightly tippy with the handle up. The third position in the manual (page 54 of mine) brings the handle all the way to the floor and can solve the tipping problem, but the problem is not mentioned. Also, It is hard to get the handle that far back when the canopy is attached, so I have gotten in the habit of putting the car seat up against either a wall or diaper bag just in case.

2. Strap covers need to be pre-washed. The strap covers are black and when moistened (what baby doesn't spit up?) leave black stains on your baby's clothes. The stains seemed to come out pretty easily in the wash, but it was really annoying until I found out what was causing it, and simply running the little covers through the wash once seems to have taken care of the problem (they remove easily enough as attached by Velcro; just wish I'd figured it out sooner).

Overall, I am pleased with the car seat, and as I have come to expect from Britax after owning many of their car seats, it is an easy rock-solid install, my baby seems extremely comfortable, and strap adjustments are easy to make. However, if you are not buying it for the rebound bar or to go with a favorite stroller, you may want to consider other options.

Our son is almost 2, and still using this car seat. He is our 5th child, and the first Britax car seat. We have used many infant car seats and this is by far the best. The side protection for his head keeps his head in place, the seat & material still look new, and best of all, no rethreading of straps. Highly recommend this seat!

Before our first child was born 2 yrs ago, we decided to spend the extra money on the "Cadillac" of carseats, the Britax line. We picked the Chaperone car seat, but were really hesistant to spend the money on the B Ready. We tried both the B Agile and a Snap and Go in the store with the Chaperone seat, and my husband was shocked at how easy they seem to flip up with just a little pressure on the handle. We shelled out for the B Ready, wanting the sturdiness/stability, the one-handed maneuvering, and expecting to use it if/when we had another baby.

Fast forward 2 yrs, and baby #2 is on the way. I was so pleased with the Chaperone for my son, and am happy to use it again for the new baby. It is a bit heavy, but SO safe - really great for a first-time mom :) It is a bit longer than other carseats, but we wanted our son in an "infant" seat as long as possible. He is 50th % for height and weight, and was in that car seat until 14 months old.

As far as the shopping cart request, I used a carrier (Moby wrap) when he was little, and then the cart itself when he could sit up. The Chaperone does not sit well on carts, but I don't think they are supposed to - never felt very secure to me personally.

We have a 2009 Ford Escape, and the Chaperone fits fine in our back seat. I'm 5'3" and my husband is 6", so it was behind my seat (driver's side). In the middle, you have to push both seats forward, and being short it's hard to lug it into that position anyway. We always used the base as well.

Also, we brought the Chaperone along for a flight when our son was 9 months old. Fit fine in the window seat, with a bit of room for the person in front to recline. As another parent told me, never hurts to treat that person to food/beverages if they can't recline fully :)
