We already owned a Britax Frontier 85, and needed a big kid seat for our second child and this one had just been announced, so we held off to purchase this one. It is Britax's answer to the Graco Nautilus, and by far superior. Clearly not the Frontier, less bells and whistles, no fancy locking mechanism for the seatbelt, cheaper fabirc, over all a more bare bones seat - but 10x easier to install than a Nautilus, durable, and long lasting. Seeing as my 5 year old has yet to hit 35lbs, the lower weight limit of just 70lbs harnessed will be a non-issue. Unless you have bigger kids, this seat is more than plenty. If money were no option I would likely still buy this over the Frontier, and the green kiwi cover helps too - so nice to have boy options other than blue, red, or black!

I wanted to love his car seat! My 5 year old outgrew her Boulevard and I wasn't ready for a regular high back booster. I bought one Frontier 90 (which I HIGHLY recommend) and this seat for my mom's car. I'm a CPST and I found installation aggravating. It may partially be the vehicle, but it was difficult to move the crotch buckle and has an annoying belt path. For a Britax, it feels very cheap. I would have returned it if she hadn't tossed the box. I was very disappointed (still am). Spend the extra cash on a Frontier - solid, installs like a breeze and is much higher quality.

I'm a Nationally Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician, or "Car seat technician" in plain english : )
Let's talk about this seat!
This is a forward facing ONLY, five point harness seat, that converts to a high back booster seat when the child outgrows the harness. It is only appropriate for ages 2 and up, as children who are under age 2 should still be REAR facing. This seat should last in harness mode until most kids are at an appropriate age for a belt positioning booster. It is outgrown in harness mode at 70 lbs OR when the childs shoulders are above the top harness position. That means if their torso height is taller than 18.5 inches, then this seat is outgrown in harness mode, and they then need to be using it in belt positioning booster mode.
Children should ride in a five point harness until they AND their small bodies are mature enough to be safe riding in a belt positioning booster. This happens around age 5-7. Then kids should be in a booster seat until their bodies are big enough and mature enough for the adult seatbelt to adequately protect them. This happens around age 10-12, but usually closer to 12.
**Only 50% of kids are tall enough at age 10 to safely ride without a booster.

LATCH, or Lower Anchors And Tethers for CHildren:
Lower anchors are only rated in vehicles to withstand a certain amount of weight in a crash. So after your child weighs 40 lbs, you have to install your childs restraint with a seatbelt and need to discontinue using the lower anchors. This is not a Britax thing, this is a vehicle thing. That is why this seat only allows you to use the lower anchors up to 40 lbs.

We needed a new seat for our 7 year old, and because he is only in the 10% on the growth chart (48 inches, approx. 46 lbs) we wanted to keep him in a harnessed booster in our 2003 Honda CR-V. We have owned 2 Britax car seats (a Roundabout and a Regent), and we've always loved how easy Britax seats were to use and install. So when we saw this Britax seat, we felt confident that it would be of similar quality and ease of use. How wrong we were! After 1.5 hours of frustration and disappointment, we gave up and put it right back in the box to be returned. Our chief complaints:

1. The one-button LATCH system was awful. We couldn't get the LATCH tight enough with only one button....the other 2 Britax seats we have include independent LATCH adjusters, which are so much easier.

2. You can only use the LATCH system to install the car seat until the child is 40 pounds. So we couldn't use the LATCH system to secure the seat for our child anyways, though we still wanted to use it to keep the seat from being a projectile when not in use by our son. So instead, we worked on securing the seat with the lap belt, which we also couldn't get nearly tight enough in our 2003 Honda CR-V. So without a way to securely attach this seat to our car, we had no choice but to return it.

3. The quality of the seat seemed far below what we have been used to with Britax. The padding felt flimsy and less substantial than what we have had in our other Britax seats. We had to lift the seat bottom to route the lap belt, and then when we'd put it back down it didn't seem to lay flat without pressure applied.

4. In general, the instructions in the manual and on the car seat seemed more confusing and inadequate than the other Britax seats we've owned. We both felt more frustrated and unsure about the proper installation and use of this seat than we ever did with our other Britax seats.

We were really disappointed in this Britax seat.

When installed properly, the seat will hardly move a millimeter at the base OR the tippy top. I will absolutely agree with other reviewers about the disappointment that you can't use Latch for kids over 40 lbs. My son isn't yet over 40 lbs, but I wanted to start installing with the belt path so I didn't forget to switch it over when he crossed that threshold. The seat itself is pretty heavy, too.

That said, while installing with the belt path takes a couple tries to get used to, it's super easy once you've done it a couple times. And be SURE to use the rear anchor over the back of the seat, it really stabilizes the seat. When installed properly with the seatbelt locked (look at your car's manual to find how to lock the shoulder belt so it can't loosen) this carseat is very stable, hardly moves (what I've always loved about Britax seats - they always feel SO sturdy when installed), and gives my 2.5 year old extremely tall son lots of extra leg room - and cup holders! It also sits him up straighter than his previous seats, which he loves - he can see out much easier.. though it does make it harder for him to nap in.

Overall, I love this seat and wish I could replace our other two Britax seats with this right now!
