4.0 out of 5 stars Good media player
I have used the unit to play MPEG2 high definition videos recorded by Sony HDV camcorders as well as MPEG2 videos from digitized Hi8 tapes. I have also played video and JPEG photos with the unit. Here are my experience with the unit.

Pros:

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent player if you only want to use it for video.
Based on quite a few good reviews, I bought this player. The BV-5005HD model was out of stock so I got this one even though it lacks the network aspects. When used for video this is a very nice player. The menus are less pleasing than say the Western Digital media player, but it will play every video format you can think of. The main reason I got it was that it will...

This review is from: Brite-View BV-6000P 1080p HD Multimedia Player with RM / RMVB & DTS, Black (Electronics)
I have used the unit to play MPEG2 high definition videos recorded by Sony HDV camcorders as well as MPEG2 videos from digitized Hi8 tapes. I have also played video and JPEG photos with the unit. Here are my experience with the unit.

Pros:
Handles the high definition video without problem. Can play at 2X speed smoothly. The automatic preview is quite convenient, allowing one to see the video while go through the file listing without the need for any extra button pushes. The RGB video outputs are good for me since I hooked the unit to an order Sony projection TV that does not have HDMI. Handles both the external hard drive ( I connected it to a 1.5 TB drive) and the flash drive without any problem.

Cons:
Instability, the unit crashed quite often when playing a list of files. It played a few files then all of a sudden reboot it self or just hang. As a consumer video player it needs to be as stable as any VCR and DVD players. It is not. It is more like an computer application that crashes.

Slow boot time. It takes a long time after power on to boot up and detect the external hard drive. During this time, there is no indication of progress. The unit won't respond to the remote control. One will have to keep on pushing the button to find out if the boot is completed or not.

Inability to add a directory to the play list. To construct a play list, one will have to select one file at time. For me, I have many albums. Each album is a directory containing many song files. I would like to add the entire album to the play list by selecting the album directory. The unit won't let me do it. I have to add each song file individually.

File extension problem: The unit can play the HD video from the Sony camcorder. But I had to rename the file extension from the original M2T to MPG. The unit does not recognize the m2t file extension. This is quite inconvenient.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product, September 29, 2009

There are many similar products in the market right now, but the major reason why I chose this product was because it is the most reasonably priced. I ordered one and I really like it. I wanted something that can consolidate all of my media files in one place without having to worry about the codec for playback, and this product just does that. It plays the movies stored on my USB drive without any hiccups and even supports the DVD menu, so it feels like watching a movie on a DVD. The setup was a breeze with no problems whatsoever. Now my family and I can watch all of our movie collections on TV. I would recommend this product to anyone who watches uses their computer to watch movie.

I also have the WD HD player and bought this as I really needed the DTS audio downmix option that this machine offers and the WD does not.
I have found everything works great, I use all the options except the Bit torrent, it seems to slow the unit down, so I leave those downloading and uploading on my computer. Also I have found that when I playback mkv files, the audio level is quite low compared to other files, resulting in my TV volume being set to full.
In addition I cannot get to playback files on my computer, I can see them all, but when I click it tells me they are password protected, which they are not.
Also their customer support is fast, but very vague. They are hoping these issues will be solved with the next software upgrade next week, but they are not specific.
I almost feel as if it was released for sale too early and that we, as the consumer, are actually beta testing this unit !!
They are offering a full refund, but that isn't the issue here. All I want is for the unit to work as advertised.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full Feature Remote Control ! ! !, October 20, 2009

This review is from: Brite-View BV-6000P 1080p HD Multimedia Player with RM / RMVB & DTS, Black (Electronics)
With the full feature remote control, the Bright-View is a way better choice than the WD media player. On the Bright-View, while watching your video, you can do many things without stopping the video. You can change the aspect ratio, audio, subtitle on/off, zoom in/out, and the "Go to" button that you can skip to your desired time (hh:mm:ss) of the video. This is very important because you don't have to use the 2/4/8/16/32 fast forward and wait so many minutes just to continue where you left off. The remote also has other features such as A-B repeat, repeat title, angle selection. For $90, full feature remote, hdmi/component/composite output, 2 USB inputs, the Bright-View is the way to go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works great, October 10, 2009

I researched 4 or 5 of these types of medial players and finally decided on this one. Overall I'm very pleased. I have it set up through a Powerline Network adapter to play media off a computer in another room. It also has two USB ports that can accept Thumbdrive or USB drive. So far it's played everything I've thrown at it and was very easy to set up. The remote is very functional and high quality. There is no fan noise, which was an issue with one of its competitors.

My only complaint is that the music player is pretty basic. For example, as far as I can figure out, I can only create a single play list and the play list function doesn't work with networked drive. A play list can only be created on a USB drive attached directly to the unit. Since this model has only been out for a few days, I'm hoping they address these limitations with a future patch. I also hope they add more online features. Right now, the only online function is the BitTorrent client, which I have no plans on using. I read in forum that YouTube will soon be added.

A superior media player. Don't waste your money on the WD media player. That player's remote is a joke. Playing videos is difficult. No menu, no skip ahead or back, no mute, etc. The BV-6000P remote has everything. The picture and sound are excellent.

1.0 out of 5 stars Have gone through 2 and both have died, March 9, 2010

This review is from: Brite-View BV-6000P 1080p HD Multimedia Player with RM / RMVB & DTS, Black (Electronics)
My first player was DOA which happens but my second one lasted 3 months in a cool well ventilated place. The parts are just to cheap to last. Now the second one is out of Amazons warranty by 10 days so I emailed the the supplier. They have not helped me with the problem yet and its been a week...I'm going to buy a different player. Buyer beware!

4.0 out of 5 stars does what is advertised, February 5, 2010
This review is from: Brite-View BV-6000P 1080p HD Multimedia Player with RM / RMVB & DTS, Black (Electronics)
This is a great product; I use it to watch my collection of home DVD videos (stored in .iso format) or play CDs stored on my home server. The only downside is the interface. It provides a list of movies/songs available which you have to scroll through. While this can be done by categories/artist, etc., (for CDs), this type of interface navigation works if you have 10-20 videos/CD in the list. It breaks down (press scroll list button 30-40 times) if you have lots of music/videos. However, I'm hoping the Brite View makers will quickly realize the shortcoming of their current interface and will at least add a search feature to let me quickly get to the video/song I want to watch/listen to. It would also be nice if it supported things like hulu natively (currently you have to put a UPNP server on your PC and connect to it via this device). Updates to firmware can be done over the Internet if placed on a network that has an Internet connection. I anxiously await the updates that will deliver the above functionality.

That said, playing a CD/DVD once you've located it is trival, and sounds/looks great through the home entertainment system. Thumbs up to these guys. Iron out the trival interface design drawbacks for large media collections, and this device is perfection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful little Device, January 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brite-View BV-6000P 1080p HD Multimedia Player with RM / RMVB & DTS, Black (Electronics)
I have had this device for months now and love it. I conceal my External Harddrives (2.5 TB total) in my entertainment center. I can access over 700 movies with this little box and play then just like if I had a 700 disk DVD changer.

It plays my ISO, avi, DivX, and a variety of others just fine. The picture quality is as good as the compression of the movie file.

I use it plugged into my 42" TV or I run it into an AV Receiver and use it with my projector.

I don't know why other people disliked it. They either got a lemon, or they are too dopey for this kind of hobby.
