This review is from: British Biscuit Tins, 1868-1939: An Aspect of Decorative Packaging (Hardcover)
Walking through the Victoria & Albert museum in London a few years back, little did I know that the collection of British biscuit tins that had me mesmerized was donated by the late M.J. Franklin. The quality of this book featuring his collection is absolutely magnificent. The book is a rectangular shape and contains 325 stunning colour plates printed on thick glossy paper. It is bound in red cloth accompanied by gilt print on the cover. It is further protected by a hard sleeve decorated with old biscuit advertisements. The greater theme of this book is the art of decorative packaging. Three eras are defined being: Victorian(1868-1901), Edwardian(1902-1914) and Twenties & Thirties(1920-1939). There are extensive details i.r.o. date, company(the firm that used the tin), title, manufacturer, size, history and further marks of each tin (where available). It is one of the few specialist books that will be enjoyed by each and every person that appreciates any form of extinct art such as decorating biscuit tins. It is one of those rare books that you wish everybody could see. The author's royalties have been given to the national society for mentally handicapped children.
