5.0 out of 5 stars Auld Lang Syne and a lot more. May 13, 2014

I also bought this CD for one item: Ernest Tomlinson's Fantasia on Auld Lang Syne. I heard only the ten minutes or so on KUSC and was so intrigued and delighted, I had to hear the rest of it. Great recording and other items too. Peter Hope is well represented, and his Majorcan Fantasy is a treat. At nearly 80 minutes of playing time, this is a good deal of good music. Ernest Tomlinson wrote some wonderful light music with a British flavor. Two CDs on the Marco Polo label are favorites, and if you like the Fantasia, you should will also enjoy these. Cheers.

5.0 out of 5 stars An admirable arrangement ! October 11, 2012

For some time I have been trying to find a recording of one of the most attractive and unusual pieces of English music (light or otherwise). This is Ernest Tomlinson's "Fantasia on Auld Lang Syne" which, according to the composer, includes not less than 152 references to other musical works. The only recording that I found had been obsolete for some considerable time, and I was therefore delighted to eventually manage to find a copy of "British By Arrangement, Vol.2." which includes this item. The rest of the pieces on this particular record, made by White Line (CD WHL 2155) and employing the superb Royal Ballet Sinfonia, conducted by Gavin Sutherland, include some charming short pieces by Peter Hope, who is a worthy contender to the expertise of Ernest Tomlinson. Also, Eric Wetherell's delightful "Airs and Graces". Slightly odd, (being a collection of "British by Arrangement",) but none the less lovely works, are The famous Tango by Isaac Albeniz, and the Fantasia and Fugue by Franz Liszt. Altogether a delightful recording, and one that I was particularly glad to add to my collection. A.S.G. Blackmore.
